Walls vs. Bridges Quote of the Day
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian." -- Pope Francis, speaking to reporters in reference to Republican front runner and neo-fascist gasbag Donald "Rump" Trump (and, let's not forget, his weaselly imitators Sen. Marco "Glug Glug" Rubio (R-Mattel) and Sen. "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz (R-Calgary)).
John Fuglesang sums it up in this visual:
Bundys And Other Seditionists Indicted On Multiple Felony Counts
A federal grand jury in Nevada indicted Cliven Bundy and four others on 16 charges related to an armed standoff near his ranch in 2014 over unpaid grazing fees.If convicted, the jamokes could spend a very long time in prison and be subject to millions of dollars in fines. Excuse us while we enjoy the schadenfreude.
The 69-year-old Nevada rancher was arrested Feb. 10 in Portland, Oregon, where his sons, Ammon and RyanBundy, are jailed and accused of organizing the occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. In the takeover, which lasted nearly six weeks, they had demanded that public lands be turned over to locals and that two area ranchers serving sentences for arson be freed.
Ammon Bundy, of Idaho, Ryan Bundy, of Nevada, Ryan Payne, of Montana, and Peter Santilli of Ohio, were also indicted by the Nevada grand jury Wednesday.
The charges against them and Cliven Bundy include: conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, conspiracy to impede or injure a federal officer, weapon use and possession, assault on a federal officer, threatening a federal law enforcement officer, obstruction, extortion to interfere with commerce, and interstate travel in aid of extortion.
"What We've Got Here Is Failure To Communicate" (UPDATED)
We were reminded of a continuing problem for Democrats when we read this:
Americans think the GOP would do a better job than Democrats handling the terrorist threat (46 percent to 34 percent) and the economy (42 percent to 37 percent). [December 2015 Pew Research Center poll]Gulp. Wow.
When you're dealing with a population whose memory apparently spans weeks rather than years, the tendency to forget that such apocalyptic events as 9/ 11 and the market crash and Great Recession occurred on a Republican's watch might be expected. Or that Bin Laden and 30,000- 33,000 terrorists have been killed since Obama took office. Or that since Obama took office, unemployment is down to 4.9%, 9.265 million jobs have been created, the stock market is up 139% and weekly earnings are up 3.4%. Could we have done better? Perhaps with a Congress that wasn't hamstrung by reactionary obstructionist Republicans. So, while there's still a mixed bag on the economy, the notion that the trickle- down, tax- cuts- for- the- rich Republicans would produce better results is risible.
But that just highlights the fact that, compared to laser- focused Republican messaging, the Democrats are shockingly poor at message focus and repetition. That focus and repetition is critical when you've got dedicated right wing media outlets as well as corporate "mainstream" media shilling for Republicans day in and day out. One of the "narratives" the media is apparently eager to play out in this election is that of surging "populist anger" at "the establishment," and at grievances real or imagined. When you're an incumbent (White House) party, that's a potentially self- fulfilling narrative you need to push back against -- hard. E.J. Dionne, Jr., echoes that concern, a problem we think goes back far beyond the Obama administration:
Democrats need to insist that while much work remains to be done, the United States is in far better shape economically than most other countries in the world. The nation is better off for the reforms in health care, financial regulation and environmental protection enacted during Obama’s term and should be proud of its energetic, entrepreneurial and diverse citizenry.
If Clinton, Sanders and their party don’t provide a forceful response to the wildly inaccurate and ridiculously bleak characterization of Obama’s presidency that the Republicans are offering, nobody will. And if this parody is allowed to stand as reality, the Democrats will lose. (our emphasis)Not only will lose, but will deserve to lose. It's political malpractice to have accomplished what the Obama administration has accomplished and still have nearly half of the general public believe the do- nothing party is the better option on terrorism and the economy. Democrats have to get into the same 24/ 7 campaign mode the Republicans operate in (they don't know how to govern, only campaign). Otherwise, a failure to communicate for Democrats can have disastrous effects in 2016.
UPDATE: What we've also got are some in the entertainment industry that view "The Donald" as some kind of mischievous rascal to be humored and humanized.

Evening Palate Cleanser
We're embarrassed to say we only recently saw this clip from the 1937 movie "Damsel in Distress," starring Fred Astaire, Joan Fontaine, and Burns & Allen. As you might guess, there wasn't much Astaire couldn't do with his feet:
Note to Silver Spring Bureau Chief Brian: think you can incorporate this into your drumming?
Twitter Tilt Of The Day - Let The People Decide!
As usual, Republican National Committee Chairstain Reince "Prepuce" Priebus comes unarmed to a duel of wits:
This is not about the person this is about the Court. The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next SCOTUS Justice— Reince Priebus (@Reince) February 17, 2016
And the rakes they abounded.Republicans want the majority who voted for Obama to count as much as the majority who voted for Gore when it comes to the Supreme Court.— Bob Schooley (@Rschooley) February 17, 2016

Today's Cartoon - Rhetoric Unbefitting
The Media And Marco Roboto (UPDATED)
We (and fellow bloggers) have noted the fact that the corporate "mainstream" media has been rooting for sweaty gusano Sen. Marco "Glug Glug" Rubio (R-Mattel) since the beginning of his candidacy. Their problem has been that young Glug Glug, since Gov. Chris "Krispykreme" Christie (Thug-NJ) gutted him in the Republican "debate" prior to the New Hampshire primary, has been revealed as an over- programmed empty suit with a tendency to panic when forced to go off script (Ed. note: that's the real indictment of young Glug Glug as a potential President). What to do? Well, simply re- craft your stories to detect a "comeback" for young Glug Glug that no one else can see!
Gary Legum looks at Glug Glug's appeal to the media, even when it's clear both the candidate and his campaign are pathetic:
Observers have long noted the kid gloves Rubio gets on both the campaign trail and often onstage in the Republican debates. Which was why Chris Christie’s effective attack on him in the last New Hampshire debate was surprising only to people who had not noticed it before. [snip]
What accounts for this phenomenon? There are a couple of possibilities. Rubio running in the general election against either Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton would give the media the sort of easy youth-vs.-experience narrative that has fueled more than one presidential campaign in the past. Rubio is young and telegenic, and you can see the press corps get excited about that the way they got excited about Barack Obama in 2008 or (ironically) Bill Clinton in 1992. Rubio is fresh-faced! He’s relatable! He likes football and rap music! He got busted for underage drinking once!"And he'll take us back to 19th Century America!" (h/t old classmate Peter Fenn)
The ineptitude of young Glug Glug's campaign can be demonstrated both in a visual and substantive way in this one fact- averse ad, which not only bollixes the old Reagan trope of "morning in America" by now suggesting decline rather than rebirth, but manages to use the skyline of ... Vancouver, Canada, as its accompanying visual. Hahahaha! Well played, young Glug Glug! Not to worry -- we're sure your adoring media will spin this as a subtle dig at Canadian ham Sen. "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz!
BONUS: Elias Isquith has more.
UPDATE: Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson had this to say about Glug Glug's appropriation of the Vancouver skyline:
“If Marco Rubio likes Vancouver’s waterfront that much, I’d encourage him to come check out our universal healthcare, public transit and Pride parade."
Mid-Week Crush Song
Occasionally, a band comes along with a sound that's hard to categorize. New York-based, but Texas influenced, FORQ (fork) put themselves in a "jazz / groove" genre, which after listening to their most recent album "Batch," would include contemporary jazz, pop, rock and classical forms of music. Two of their members founded the band Snarky Puppy, which just won a collaborative Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. FORQ's bassist, Michael League, will be producing an album for folk rock icon David Crosby in the coming year. Their work, to say the least, is eclectic. Off of their recent album, here is today's song, "Crush."

J.E.B.!'s Latest Desperate Idiocy (UPDATED)
The House of Bush's contribution to the Republican clown car, John Ellis "J.E.B.!" Bush, is polling near the bottom of the pile in South Carolina, so he's pulling out all the stops to attract the mouthbreathers that have gravitated to neo-fascist poo-flinger Donald "Rump" Trump and creepy demagogue Sen. "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz. Maybe he's trying to butch up his image with this awful Twitter message:
America. pic.twitter.com/TeduJkwQF3— Jeb Bush (@JebBush) February 16, 2016
Which prompted a flood of comments ridiculing and scorning J.E.B.!, for example:
.@JebBush America. pic.twitter.com/TZxKRNSbVc— Buzz_Patriot (@Buzz_Patriot) February 17, 2016
Of course, it could be a message that he's about to put his candidacy out of its misery.

We Are Not Astonished
Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has flagged NBC/MSNBC Justice correspondent Pete Williams for suggesting on MSNBC that blocking a President from even nominating a Supreme Court justice in his final year in office has ample precedent, when it doesn't. Josh is right, but seems to be astonished at Williams' acceptance -- along with many Beltway media colleagues of Williams by the way-- of that latest piece of Republican nonsense. We'd simply note that Williams has a résumé that includes serving as then-Rep. Dick "The Dick" Cheney's press secretary from 1986 to 1989, and then as The Dick's Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DOD from 1989 to 1993. As so many political hacks, Williams used the revolving door between politics and "journalism" after he left the employ of The Dick.
So we're not astonished at all.
Gambling, Foreign Money and Political Corruption
Casino mega-mogul and financier of right-wing politicians here and in Israel Sheldon "Smelly Shelly" Adelson is a major force in the Republican / New Confederate / Stupid / Shooter's Party, having put up over $100 million of his estimated $20 billion fortune in a losing effort to defeat President Obama in 2012. Smelly Shelly's reach goes beyond his Las Vegas gambling empire to the international gambling mecca of Macau, where he's a major player in the shadowy mix of gambling and Chinese politics. He's also the recent purchaser of Las Vegas' largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, where he's certain to put his own right-wing editorial slant on the paper.
In his excellent article in the March/April issue of Mother Jones, Matt Isaacs delves into the story of Smelly Shelly's more recent activities in Macau. Here are a few clips that stand out, starting with a chilling account of a burglary at the home of a former employee of Smelly Shelly's, who is suing him:
"Jacobs had his suspicions as to why his house had been burgled. For five years he'd been locked in a protracted legal battle with one of the wealthiest men on Earth. Jacobs had filed a wrongful-termination case, accusing his former boss of ordering him to perform 'illegal activities.' Could the burglary have been the desperate act of some yes-man or fixer, or even the gangsters he'd encountered while working in China? 'I don't know who is behind it,' Jacobs testified in a subsequent legal proceeding, admitting he had no facts to suggest it was his old employer. 'I know who might have a benefit or interest in understanding what information I may have had.'"There's a connection between the lawsuit that Steve Jacobs has brought against Smelly Shelly and the 2016 elections, where the casino mogul has already been courted by each of the Rethug candidates for President. As the saying goes, "follow the money":
"Adelson's casinos in Macau, a special administrative region of China, provide the majority of the revenue for his company, Las Vegas Sands. But beneath Macau's glitz lurk organized crime, corruption, and a shadow banking system that has allegedly laundered billions of dollars for China's ruling elite. In 2013, the chair of Nevada's powerful Gaming Control Board told a federal commission that it was 'common knowledge' that the lucrative VIP rooms in Macau casinos have 'long been dominated by Asian organized crime.' That same year, a federal commission cited a study finding that more than $200 billion in 'ill-gotten funds are channeled through Macau each year.'What follows is Isaacs' detailed account of the convoluted and often corrupt dealings involving the casino business in Macao. It's those dealings which led to investigations into potential violations by Smelly Shelly of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars U.S. businesses from bribing foreign officials, something we've posted on.
Which raises the question: Is dirty money spent by corrupt Chinese officials at Macau casinos flowing into our elections, at least indirectly?" (emphasis added)
That's the world (underworld would be more accurate) that the Citizens United decision has brought us. Smelly Shelly's both a product and a beneficiary of that world.
Chinless Dildo Quote of the Day
The great Samantha Bee, one of Jon Stewart's ensemble on "The Daily Show," has her own weekly show, "Full Frontal," every Monday on TBS at 10:30 p.m. Eastern, and it's a supremely funny must watch. Last night, she tore into the Republican argument that (black Democratic) Presidents only have 3 years in their second term in office, and therefore can't do anything in the fourth year that they're duty bound to do under the Constitution (which the Rethugs hold so very dear). That's especially the case when it comes to nominating a replacement for right-wing Justice Antonin Scalia.
This part will last in our memories for years to come, especially the new sobriquet for chin-challenged Sen. Mitch McConnell:
“What better way to honor America’s greatest champion of original intent than by wiping your obstructionist ass on the very document he holds so dear....Let’s just have a Supreme Court vacancy for a year because some chinless dildo wants a justice who’ll use his gavel to plug up your abortion hole.”

Going Nuts
Speaking at a gathering outside of Charleston, SC this afternoon, Republican front runner and neo-fascist blowhard Donald "Rump" Trump had this simple assessment about rival Texas Sen. and Joseph McCarthy doppelgänger "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz:
"I think he's an unstable person. He's nuts."He also called the Texas extremist "a liar" repeatedly, but that's a given. As bonuses, he repeated the fact that the Iraq disaster and 9-11 happened on Bush dynasty scion John Ellis "J.E.B.!" Bush's clueless brother's watch -- you know, the guy that "kept us safe" -- and warned the Rethuglican National Committee about stacking the audiences in future debates in favor of his opponents as they did in South Carolina. Rump then insinuated that further RNC bias against him might force him to make a third party run. Chaos! Bwahahaha!
Let the bloodletting continue and continue!

BONUS: If there's any doubt how the "mainstream" corporate media is framing the narrative of this outrage, check this out. It would seem that the President, by exercising his responsibility under the Constitution, is provoking a "partisan battle." What gutless, clueless, corrupt assholes, especially this d- bag.
Tweets Of The Day - Where's That Clause In The Constitution?
From our favorite Senator:
.@SenateMajLdr is right that Americans should have a voice in selecting the next SCOTUS justice. In fact, they did: when @POTUS won in 2012.— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) February 14, 2016
Art II Sec 2 of the Constitution says the President nominates Supreme Court justices with the advice & consent of the Senate.— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) February 14, 2016
I can’t find a clause in the Constitution that says “…except when there’s a year left in the term of a Democratic President.”— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) February 14, 2016
We need to make sure Republicans catch Holy Hell for this latest, most egregious act of political extremism -- now and at the ballot box in November.
