The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good #1:

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, has staged a dramatic election fightback, defeating his far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, to claim a historic fourth term in power.

With nearly 99% of votes counted the 80-year-old leftist received 51.75% of the vote to his 45-year-old rival’s 48.25%.

Lula narrowly lost the first round of the election to Bolsonaro in early October, casting his political future into doubt and plunging progressive Brazilians into three weeks of despair. Never, since the return of democracy in the 1980s, has the first round runner-up won the second vote.

But Lula did precisely that on Sunday, prompting joyous scenes on the streets of São Paulo, where he had been following the count, and at the hotel where he was watching the count.

As the result was confirmed, Reginaldo Lopes, a key Lula ally, told the Guardian: “I feel incredible … This is Brazil telling the world that the extreme right is fascist, that the extreme right is against black people, is against the poor, against the state, against gay people ... We are going to reorganize the democratic forces [in this country].”...

The good #2:

The long-serving leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has conceded defeat, ushering in a seismic political shift after a historic election that saw the increasingly authoritarian leader pitted against a student-led movement that had spent two years protesting against his government.

Vučić pointed to preliminary results that suggested voters had overwhelmingly backed the students, potentially giving them a majority in the country’s 250-seat parliament.

“We still do not have final results,” Vučić told supporters at his party headquarters in Belgrade. “On the basis of a sample … it is clear that we have lost these elections, the Student ‌List has ‌won, they will have between 135 ‌and 140 seats and we will have 105.”

A representative sample by the CESID-IPSPS pollsters suggested that the Student List’s candidate list will have 138 deputies, while Vučić’s rightwing Serbian Progressive party (SNS) garnered 104 seats. The remaining seats ‌were likely to be shared between ethnic national minority parties, said the pollsters.

As news broke that Vučić’s 12 years in power had come to an end, celebrations erupted on the streets of Belgrade and other cities.
  [snip]

As people waited for the election results to come in, speculation had begun to swirl online about whether Vučić would seek to hold on to power regardless. His swift admission of defeat, however, was reminiscent of his ally, Viktor Orbán, in neighbouring Hungary six months ago, fuelling hopes of a democratic resurgence to central Europe...

Two important victories for democratic movements over right-wing  authoritarianism.  Next are elections in Israel tomorrow, then our mid-terms.  Keep the momentum going!

The bad:

US forces in the Middle East are prepared to launch new, potentially major, military operations against Iran "within 96 hours of receiving" an order from President Donald Trump, according to two US officials.

Sufficient forces are now deployed in the region to carry out the potential attacks, the sources said. The scope of new US military operations would likely go beyond efforts to simply "mow the lawn" or maintain the status quo by striking radars, launchers and other Iranian assets that can be quickly reconstituted — as has been the case since Trump halted full combat operations earlier this year, the sources added.

"It will be a big effort," one of the officials told CNN. That view has been echoed by other current and former US officials familiar with internal military planning discussions — some of whom say it is a question of when, not if, Trump will issue a go-order. They believe it could come any time before the end of the year, though most likely after the US midterm elections.

Iranian forces are now more familiar with US tactics, and it would therefore be harder for the American military to effectively destroy all potential intended targets. However, leaders in US Central Command and the Pentagon have been developing a wide-ranging target list, which includes Iranian energy infrastructure, military sites and nuclear facilities.

Officials say that Trump has not made up his mind on what he will do after the midterms but that he appears to be leaning toward ordering major action. But officials also caution that Trump has appeared in the past to lean toward certain actions only to back off at the last moment...

TACO keeps telegraphing a major escalation in his war of choice with Iran, a war that he keeps insisting we won after Iran was obliterated.  He wants something "big" to distract from his upcoming mid-terms defeat.  The period between the election and when a new Congress is seated on January 3 is bound to  be one of the most dangerous times in our history.

The ugly:

President Donald Trump intensified his anti-Muslim rhetoric against Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday, portraying him as a threat to national security and questioning his loyalty to the United States in remarks that drew a sharp rebuke from a former top Arab American ally.

Trump called El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official, a "jihadist" who was "on the side of the terrorists" and would "have to go through a metal detector before he's allowed to go into the Senate." He also repeatedly invoked the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, drawing a comparison between stopping El-Sayed from entering the Senate chamber and the passengers who fought back against the hijackers aboard United Flight 93.

El-Sayed, who would become the nation's first Muslim senator if elected, has called attacks on his loyalty to the country "shameful" and repeatedly denied any ties to extremist groups. The Republican president's remarks were condemned by Bishara Bahbah, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump, the group that helped lead the president's outreach to Arab American voters in 2024.

"The president's statements are out of line," he said in a phone interview. "They are crossing a red line. They are racist."

With Republicans on the defensive over inflation, soaring fuel prices and the Iran war, the president has been trying to generate turnout by claiming that El-Sayed and other Democrats are existential threats to America, instead of electoral rivals. Michigan's Senate race between El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers is among a handful of contests that could determine control of the chamber...

The Scoundrel-in-Chief, to whom no slur is off limits, has firmly established himself as a racist, a bigot, and a white nationalist.  His desperation to save the Senate (and most importantly to him, himself) is leading to him campaign in swing states and red states alike, where the dotard is just as likely to comment on a man's ass as he is to smear Americans whose religion or race or ethnicity he doesn't like. He's not a president of all the American people and never was;  he's a moron MAGAt white nationalist cult leader and rabble-rouser.  How far we've fallen.

QOTD: Enough Is Enough

Former President Barack Obama, speaking at a rally in Cleveland, Ohio yesterday for Senate candidate Sherrod Brown, and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, noting that while we're stuck with the vile and corrupt Malignant Fascist for another two years, that doesn't hold for the upcoming mid-terms:

"We're not stuck with a spineless Congress and Republican governors who are handling lawlessness and carelessness and cruelty and indifference for working people. After two years of chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence, the likes of which we have not seen in modern times, you get a chance to say enough is enough."

(Obama also made some choice comments about the MF and his focus on autocratic decor.)

Trump: "We're Making A Frickin' Fortune" On High Oil Prices!

More fodder for Democrats' closing argument that the corrupt Malignant Fascist and his Epstein class billionaire buddies are getting rich while everyone else struggles:

President Donald Trump on Saturday used a portion of his midterm rally speech in Georgia to brag about the amount of money the U.S. is making off high oil prices.

Trump said that his advisors implored him not include the line in his speech, but clearly he did not listen.

“The United States oil and gas business is making hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump said. “So, I said ‘I wonder if I should say this.’”

Trump went on to repeat this brag several times while predicting what the “fake news” would say about his remarks.

“I can just see the fake headlines,” Trump said. “’President Trump is talking about all the money they’re making while people are suffering at the pump.’ That’ll be the headline. But I said ‘I don’t give damn, I’m gonna say it: We’re making a frickin fortune.” [Ed. :  Who's "we," you corrupt, venal grifter?  Your contributors in the oil and gas business?  You , to the tune of  $4.4+ million?]

Trump has made a habit of including this brag in his stump speeches as of late. At a rally in Arizona on October 14, Trump said the “country is making more money than it’s ever made because of the fact that oil is so high.”

Trump’s remarks come just as Brent Crude oil, the global benchmark for oil prices, hit a nearly six-month high on Friday, rising to roughly $116 per barrel... (our emphasis)

Keep hitting the campaign trail, you cosseted sub-moron MF!  And remember to always stress how "we" (you) are making a fortune on high oil prices, and that you're on the ballot!

Sunday Reflection: The Improvement Of People's Lives

"Politics is not about power. Politics is not about money. Politics is not about winning for the sake of winning. Politics is about the improvement of people's lives. Politics is about the improvement of people's lives. It's about advancing the cause of peace and justice in our country and the world. Politics is about doing well for the people."-- the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (7/21/1944 - 10/25/2002), from his book "The Conscience of a Liberal: Reclaiming the Compassionate Agenda" (2002). Wellstone, a progressive icon and leading figure, famously authored the Wellstone Amendment that changed campaign finance laws, which was later overturned by the Republican Supreme Court under their infamous Citizens United ruling, which opened the floodgates to dark money in politics.  He died campaigning with his wife and daughter in 2002, running for a third term.  We need more Paul Wellstones now more than ever.

You wouldn't catch a MAGAt politician uttering those words today, for politics to them is about nothing but power and accumulating wealth for themselves and their donors, as exemplified by the corrupt and mentally unfit Malignant Fascist.  You can help change that by going here and giving what you can.

QOTD -- Trump's Focus

Former President Barack Obama, at a rally in Cleveland, OH, today, comparing the Malignant Fascist's tacky White House renovations to the golden palace of Saddam Hussein:

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but [Trump] seems very focused on home renovations. He should be on HGTV. The guy’s building a ballroom that’s bigger than the White House. Paved over the Rose Garden and put a helicopter pad on the South Lawn. And there’s gold everywhere, what’s up with the gold?

“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake factory, just gold everywhere."

In addition to being funny, it's absolutely true.  The Malignant Fascist's  focus, as always, has been on himself and aggrandizing his deeply insecure, fragile ego.  Are the American people finally getting it?  We'll see in 10 days.

DOJ's Alaska Senate Race Interference Suit "Won't Go Anywhere"

Notre Dame Law School election law professor Derek Muller, writing at Election Law Blog, tells us why the Department of "Justice's" scheme to block the Alaska Senate election result certification if Democrat Mary Peltola wins won't work :

The Department of Justice has filed United States v. Alaska in federal court. The gist of the case is this: there’s a risk of voter confusion from having two Dan Sullivans on the ballot, and the State of Alaska should not be permitted to certify its results “pending an investigation” to determine whether any votes cast for the one Sullivan were meant for another.

The case isn’t yet ripe, obviously, but the Department is pre-suing both to signal to the public that it’s “doing something” and that it’s ready if the result goes against the GOP in the state. And of course it probably would have helped Alaska if the Department thought about weighing in months and months ago, when there was feasibility in assisting with respect to the remedy.

Such factual investigation is essentially impossible (the best evidence that voters preferred one Sullivan over another is how they marked their ballots) and a reason why parties bring ballot access cases before the ballots are printed rather than after, so such a factual caveat is largely meaningless.

But setting aside the factual issue, the legal argument is one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen. It cites the preamble to the National Voter Registration Act–its “findings and purposes”–as the source of law for the claim. That part reads, “The purposes of this chapter are . . . to protect the integrity of the electoral process.” 52 U.S.C. § 20501(b)(3).

The Department excised the “The purposes of this chapter are” language throughout its complaint and replaced it with something not in the statute. For instance, it claims that certifying the result “would violate Defendants’ duties under the NVRA to ‘protect
the integrity of the electoral process.'” That is certainly not what the NVRA does. This language places no “duties” on a state outside of those enumerated in the chapter. And, of course, the Department cannot find any ballot access rules in the chapter.

I also cannot imagine anything some election litigators in the Republican Party might want less than to open this language of the NVRA to freewheeling litigation around the United States in future elections.

Some, in a panic, might react that the Department is trying to deny certification of an election in a state. Of course that’s what the Department is trying to do. But the legal claim is so absurdly thin, there’s essentially no likelihood of success. (I write essentially because, of course, one never knows how one judge or two judges on a panel might react, but I think the Supreme Court will have nothing for this claim.)

In short, like many Department letters over the last few years, it is designed to win the press release rather than the litigation. This one simply takes the form of a complaint... (our emphasis)

The best way to forestall these kinds of risible, un-Constitutional power grabs is for voters to overwhelmingly vote for Democrats -- in Alaska and every other State on every ballot line.  Trying to pull off a coup when you're losing by big margins everywhere in the country isn't something that would seem destined for success, especially with these low-voltage clowns running the show.

This dumb hack has no power to do that. States don't have to listen to anything he says.

"Hollowed Out In the Age Of Trump"

In an analysis posted on MSNOW.com,  Eric Garcia, author and senior correspondent for The Independent writes about the narcissistic felon's grip on his party and how it's hollowed the party out in several states:

"Earlier this week, during a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, President Donald Trump admitted that Democrat Roy Cooper is “going to become your senator and it’s crazy.”

It was especially embarrassing for Cooper’s Republican opponent. As chair of the North Carolina GOP, Michael Whatley ingratiated himself with Trump to such an extent that Trump made him chair of the Republican National Committee. [snip]

Just down the Atlantic coast, Georgia Republicans are also reeling in their Senate contest. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., is running away with the race against Rep. Mike Collins, an ultra-MAGA conservative who has come under fire for his ties to his white nationalist influencer son-in-law.

The two Senate contests, though, are just portents of much bigger problems facing North Carolina and Georgia Republicans — two state parties hollowed out in the age of Trump. [snip]

While Trump, over the past decade, has displayed a remarkable ability to survive and win elections, his acolytes in these former GOP strongholds are losing down the ballot. These two phenomena are connected: Trump has turned the Republican Party that cares about electing like-minded individuals into a party meant to support him, and him alone. In doing so, it has lost its ability to save itself." (our emphasis)

Garcia also notes the comparable situation in formerly red Arizona, which is set to flip three MAGA Republican seats and retain their Dem Governor.  The more he meddles in local politics, the more voters turn to Dems, so that's a good thing.

Today we're featuring "Who You Callin' Crazy," the newest release and a bonus track from The Rolling Stones' latest album, "Foreign Tongues, Loose Lips" edition.  Still rocking solid in their seventh decade as a group.

Criminal Probe Opened Against Lewandowski

Corey Lewandowski, the former "advisor" and rumored lover of disgraced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, is under investigation by the "Justice" Department for alleged misconduct regarding DHS' contracting.  From The Guardian::

"Corey Lewandowski, a former political adviser to Donald Trump and top aide at the Department of Homeland Security, is under criminal investigation over allegations he profited off his role in the US government, three US officials and a fourth person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.

The investigation began with a criminal referral to the justice department from the internal watchdog at DHS, according to the four people. The DHS inspector general’s office has been investigating Lewandowski’s involvement in the handling of certain government contracts, according to one of the people, a DHS official. [snip]

Lewandowski served as a top aide to the former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem during her tenure leading DHS. Trump fired Noem in March after months of controversy, including the fatal shootings of two US citizens by federal officers in Minneapolis and lawmakers’ questions over a $220m advertising contract promoting Noem that was awarded without a standard bidding process.

Lewandowski had signed some DHS contracts despite having questionable legal authority as a special government ‌employee, according to the DHS official. Certain grants and contracts, including those involving the Federal Emergency Management Agency, were put on hold at Lewandowski’s direction, according to two of the people, both of whom are DHS officials."(our emphasis)

Lewandowski is alleged to have shaken down contractors for a kickback arrangement through a company owned by a Noem contributor.  Noem is likely up to her neck in the allegations, too, as the couple was inseparable throughout her term in office.  Stay tuned as the Trump Mafia story continues.

Trump Sides With Ramaswamy On False And Vicious Acton Ad

What else should anyone expect from a person mentioned over 38,000 times in the Epstein pedo files, who is a convicted sexual abuser, adulterer, and complete moral and ethical cipher, when commenting on Ramaswamy's scurrilous attack ad:

No empathy in the slightest for the victim of years of pedophile rape, just more vicious attacks and insipid political sniping and commentary.  Siding with the rapist, who fled with Amy Acton's mother to avoid prosecution, is another low point for the Malignant Fascist, who is already somewhere in 9th circle of Hell territory.

If that wasn't enough, he sicced his Super PAC on the family of Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, calling them liars just as he called Amy Acton a liar (and Stormy Daniels, and E. Jean Carroll, and the 28 women who've accused him of sexual misconduct, etc.).  Some might call that a pattern of behavior.

Now he has the teeny tiny brass balls to call even more victims "liars."  That would get him a Nobel  Pultizer Prize for Irony if they had one (don't tell the moron MF they don't).  How sick a country have we become to tolerate this evil shitstain in the highest office in the land, and the most powerful in the world?  And how sick does a political party have to be to follow and exalt this garbage person under any and all circumstances?
