Pascal Schmelz takes us on a 16-day, 270 km silent hike through the Southern Alps of New Zealand. He summarizes the journey:
To capture the diverse landscapes of the South Island, this 16-day journey is divided into four distinct sections:
The 8-Day Trek: A continuous loop through the valleys and alpine passes of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks, combining the Rees-Dart Track, the Routeburn Track, and the Greenstone and Caples Tracks.
The 4-Day Loop: A journey through the Nelson Lakes wilderness along the Travers-Sabine Circuit, including a side trip to Blue Lake, known for having the clearest natural water in the world.
Gertrude Saddle (Overnighter): A steep alpine ascent onto the granite ridges of the Darren Mountains, camping with a direct view looking down into Milford Sound.
Dore Pass (Overnighter): A demanding, untracked route over the pass to capture the vast vista overlooking the historic Milford Track valley.
Stunning views, pristine wilderness, and wide-open spaces are all part of the trek. A little vicarious living on the first Saturday morning in August.
