Pope Donohue's Latest Crusade

It's been awhile since we've heard from hateful shitsack "Sweaty" Bill Donohue, self-appointed head of something called the "Catholic League."  Seems Sweaty Bill's up in a lather about a segment of "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO, specifically Maher's interview with columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage.  Dan got Sweaty Bill's rosary in a twist when he vented his frustration at the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church and its obsession with peoples' sexy time, and specifically with a Catholic Bishop's statement that children of same sex parents were at greater risk of suicide (!).   Here are the relevant excerpts (C&L video at the link):
"Sorry, I am just done being lectured about children and their safety by Catholic-f*cking bishops, priests, cardinals.” he continued. “The pope, himself, has let it go. The new pope, who I kind of dig, has let it go."
Savage noted that Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas John Paprocki had recently performed an exorcism on the state of Illinois after Gov. Pat Quinn (D) signed a bill legalizing same sex marriage.
"To exorcise the state of gay people of having full civil equality!" Savage said. "No exorcism, exorcising the demons of, like, kiddie-f*cking Catholic priests. They never got around to that exorcism."
"They don't have moral high ground when they talk about the welfare and safety of children, they just don't," he added. "They have squandered that on the tips of their d*cks."
Sweaty Bill, of course, is now pressuring HBO to cancel "Real Time" (it must be fundraising time at the League).  Good luck with that.

Meanwhile, Savage's comments about the Church not having the moral high ground are even more appropriate when applied to Sweaty Bill and his den of homophobic right-wing god-botherers.  The "Catholic League", through Donohue, presumes to speak as an "anti-defamation" organization, but he seemingly spends most of his time defaming gays and Jews, while defending pedophile priests. Did we mention he runs the "Catholic League" like a Republican front organization, whose Board of Advisors reads like a wingnut directory (Kate O'Beirne? Brent Bozell?? Alan Keyes???).

Pope Francis, time to take back the Catholic brand from this bigot.

BONUS:   Let's see if Sweaty Bill will go after Oxycontin Rush Limbaugh for this... or Stuart Varney for this...  or Pammy Jugs for this... now that's a lot of defamation!

"Soulless Make-Believe Twee Bullshit" in Two Parts

Part Un (John Cole at Balloon Juice):

"Everything that comes out of this man’s [the "Catholic" League's hateful shitsack Bill Donohue] mouth is pure bile:

'This morning, the Catholic League, headed by the virulently homophobic Bill Donohue (right), said via Twitter, “Lesbian Dem Hilary Rosen tells Ann Romney she never worked a day in her life. Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own.'

"Get that one-two-three punch? Gotta give Donohue credit: He belittled lesbians, Democrats, and adoption all in less than 140 characters.

"He’s like Rush Limbaugh without the wit and charm and good looks. Why is he still accepted in polite company? Just a few weeks ago, he was coordinating attacks on the victims of molestation. Now this?"

Part Deux (Wonkette):

"The simplest way to capture the zeitgeist on any particularly thick day of soulless make-believe twee bullshit is to visit the blog of Jennifer Rubin, conservative commentator for the Washington Post and breathtakingly unsubtle hack for the Mitt Romney presidential campaign. Her interview with Ann Romney today is a masterwork of synthetically engineered sympathy.

'Despite the public tweets from President Obama’s advisers and Rosen, no one has called her to apologize — not the campaign, not the White House and not Rosen. She resists playing the victim. “I am okay,” she said. “I have a thick skin.” She even jokes that raising five boys was “a lot tougher” than anything Rosen is going to dish out.'

"Ann Romney joined Twitter last night for the sole purpose of playing the victim as fast as possible. She then spoke to Jennifer Rubin on her way to the airport, to play the victim. The Mitt Romney campaign strategy today and indefinitely going forward is for Ann Romney to play the victim, as much as possible, in all media platforms."

And, as with the pig who is the only happy participant in a mud wrestling contest, the ones most happy about this "twee bullshit" are the twee "mainstream media" running this faux story non-stop.

The Un-Catholic League

As we've noted before (3/14/07), the so-called Catholic League, which bills itself as a "Catholic civil rights organization," is nothing more than a unit of the Rethuglican Party. Any group that counts among its "trustees" Brent Bozell III, Dinesh D'Souza, Alan Keyes, and Kate O'Beirne has lost any claim to political neutrality. Under the leadership of Bill Donohue, the Catholic Republican League has fearlessly taken on "cultural issues" in the form of Rosie O'Donnell, but has been curiously quiet about the huge er... elephant under the rug -- pedophile priests.

In the entry noted above, we remarked how odd it was that Donohue didn't go after Obergruppenfuhrer Hannity over his remarks about pedophile priests. Now, you can scan the Republican Catholic League's news releases in vain to find any mention of the recent historic $600+ million settlement by the Los Angeles Archdiocese over its decades-long cover-up of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. We guess since it's not an issue they can bash "secular progressive humanists" about, it's not worth commenting on. "Move along, nothing to see here..."

* * * crickets chirping * * *

Remember the tempest a few weeks ago when the right wing, let by the infamous "Catholic League", went after two bloggers that had just signed on the the Edwards for President campaign? They were fiercely attacked by the League for anti-Catholic bigotry. Recently, Faux Noise channel's despicable Sean Hannity spoke to a Catholic priest, Thomas Euteneuer, and stated his support for contraception. When the priest argued back to Herr Hannity, he blasted the Catholic Church for the pedophile sex scandals and the level of corruption in the Church. You'd assume the Catholic League would then attack Herr Hannity for anti-Catholic bigotry, right? You'd be wrong. Over a week has passed, and nothing. Not surprising, though, when you check out the League's advisory board: Alan Keyes, Dinesh D'Souza, Brent Bozell, Linda Chavez, William Simon, Kate O'Beirne, and an assortment of right wing Rethuglicans. League President William Donohue (shown looking smug in photo) is affiliated with the right wing Heritage Foundation and the Washington Legal Foundation.
