More "Fiscal Cliff" Polls
The latest Quinnipiac poll shows you can't fool all of the people all of the time:
And the latest AP-GfK poll shows the American people are solidly behind the President's positions on the "fiscal cliff":
That's what we call leverage.

"American voters say 56 - 38 percent that Obama and congressional Democrats will make a good faith effort to cooperate with congressional Republicans on important issues. By 51 - 43 percent, voters say congressional Republicans will not act in good faith."

"Americans prefer letting tax cuts expire for the country's top earners, as President Barack Obama insists, while support has declined for cutting government services to curb budget deficits, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows. Fewer than half the Republicans polled favor continuing the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy.
"There's also a reluctance to trim Social Security, Medicare or defense programs, three of the biggest drivers of federal spending, the survey released Wednesday found. The results could strengthen Obama's hand in his fiscal cliff duel with Republicans, in which he wants to raise taxes on the rich and cut spending by less than the GOP wants."
That's what we call leverage.

Syrian tyrant Bashar Assad is contemplating the use of sarin gas against the uprising of the Syrian people, which has already claimed thousands of lives. The Syrian armed forces are reportedly preparing their munitions for the use of deadly poison gas. President Obama has called the use of this WMD as the "red line" that could bring U.S. military intervention, but Assad is apparently calculating that he's running out of options to hold on to power. Russia is a key player, as Syria's arms supplier and prominent ally, but it's hard to imagine Russia standing by while their client uses WMD against its citizens.

Disability Rights and Wrongs
Jon Stewart wonders if we've hit rock bottom with the Senate Rethuglicans' voting down the U.N. treaty on disabled rights. Um... almost certainly not.
Once again, the Rethuglicans who voted against this treaty are moral cowards, utter morons or some combination of the two. As long as we have the likes of nitwit James Inhofe and teatard favorite Mike Lee in the Senate, there is no bottom.

Demented's Departing
A political shocker was felt this morning when tea bagger icon and New Confederate leader Sen. Jim "Demented" DeMint (R-Ft. Sumter) announced that he will resign his Senate seat in January to head the far right bull feces factory (our white) Heritage Foundation. Re-elected in 2010, Demented had indicated that he wouldn't run for another term in 2016, but this caught the political class by surprise.
With South Carolina firmly in Rethuglican hands, another right winger is sure to take Demented's place as an appointee prior to a special election. It's interesting to note, though, that in this very red state, President Obama's approval rating is a remarkable 48%, 10 points higher than the Rethuglican Governor's. The times they are a changin'.

Disability Rights Treaty Goes Down at the Hands of Far-Right
"One by one, according to Roll Call, the senators approached Mr. [Bob] Dole to pat his shoulder or clasp his hand, making gestures of respect for the man who was for many years the Republican majority leader.
"Then he was wheeled away, and all but a handful of the Republicans bailed out on him. The treaty failed. It needed a two-thirds vote to pass, or 67 votes, and fell six short.
"So much for America’s support of a global agreement 'to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities.'
"The vote was a triumph for Glenn Beck, Rick Santorum and others on the hard-right loon fringe, who have been feverishly denouncing the treaty as a United Nations world-government conspiracy to kill disabled children (you can look it up)."
Bob Dole, of course, is a decorated, disabled American veteran from World War II, as well as the former Republican presidential standard bearer in 1996. He was there to voice support for passage of the treaty; unfortunately, however, only a handful of Rethuglican Senators voted for it. So we are left once again with America justly ridiculed because of the actions of the far-right bums who spoke and voted against the treaty. They aren't fit to clean out anyone's bed pan.

Harold Meyerson notes that, when it came to campaign contributions, President Obama "won" the high-tech sector, while Willard "I Thought I Had It In The Bag" Romney "won" the banksters and casino moguls:

A Jazz Icon Passes
Jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck died today at the age of 91, one day before his 92nd birthday. Leader of the famous Dave Brubeck Quartet, he was one of the most popular jazz musicians of the 20th century, winning the National Medal of Arts, Kennedy Center honors, and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. Here's a song from his best selling "Time Out" album. RIP.

Papa John's: A Case Study in Why Politics and Pizza Don't Mix
Ha-ha:
"The opinion of Papa John's among recent casual diners dropped precipitously after CEO John Schnatter's public comments about Obamacare, according to a new study from YouGov BrandIndex, which researches brand perception for marketing directors, brand managers and PR reps. The site conducts thousands of interviews a day, providing real-time info that shows trends and responses to different marketing techniques or in this case, public gaffes.
"The national pizza chain's YouGov BrandIndex Buzz score -- which the site uses as an indication of brand favorability -- dropped to four at the end of November, down from 32 on election day."
Not that it had much of a reputation to begin with.
BONUS: Maybe this purveyor of over-priced, ass-fattening fare is the next one to drive his company's favorability numbers down?
