Letters We Wish We'd Written Dept.

In this morning's Washington Post:

Now that the Republicans have elected one of the 147 traitors to the Constitution and this country as speaker of the House, they have openly declared their objective of destroying American democracy.

If there was any doubt before it is now clear, with the withdrawal of Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and election of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.): The only Republicans who can have any support or standing in the party are those who tried to prevent the certification of the election of Joe Biden as president and who continue to lick the boots of the would-be usurper and insurrectionist currently under indictment in several jurisdictions across the country. To call these members of Congress conservatives is laughable; to call them legislators even more ludicrous. They are, to borrow one of their leader’s favorite labels of scorn, enemies of the people.

If their constituents have any sense, they will throw all of these right-wing, autocracy-loving radicals out of office at the earliest opportunity.

Harris Factor, Columbia

The clearest sign yet that it's the infantile, damaged Malignant Loser's party/ coup cult was the chaos of the last month, followed by the "ordination by God" of MAGAt extremist Mike Johnson (Sedition-LA) as Speaker. Most of these traitors are safe in the knowledge that their constituents don't have any sense and will cheerfully elect them again and again.  Sic transit gloria America.

More thoughts here.

Hearts And Guns

“The end of the day, it’s, the problem is the human heart. It’s not guns. It’s not the weapons. At the end of the day, we have to protect the right of the citizens to protect themselves, and that’s the Second Amendment.” -- Christofascist weasel and January 6 coup plotter House Speaker Mike "Shriveled" Johnson, on Sean Hannity's poo-fling on Fox, explaining it's not the guns, it's the hearts.

The Washington Post's superb Alexandra Petri has a response to that sick nonsense. Here's an excerpt, but please read her whole op-ed:

"Obviously the problem is the human heart. The human heart cannot stand the strain of living in the United States (a nice place, were it not for the nagging suspicion that any time you gather in a public place you might be gruesomely murdered with a gun). The human heart was not built for this low whine of anxious terror. It is the human heart’s fault — not strong enough. Sometimes the human heart just stops. (Only in America, like this.) You never see a gun get stopped by something as routine as despair. You never see a gun get stopped by anything.

The problem is not guns. It’s not weapons. We have to protect ourselves. (From what, Mike? From what?) We must have our guns, to protect ourselves. (Then what are we arming the police like this for? Why are they laden with all this military-grade equipment, if protecting myself is not something I’m supposed to be outsourcing to them?)

The problem is the human heart. It breaks a little bit each time we see another mass shooting. If only they were a harder target. That is the problem. That so many hearts are aching for something to change, for a framework of laws that does not accept gun violence as inevitable.

Think what a different country we would have if we wanted to protect the human heart instead of the gun."  (our emphasis)

A number of people noted Johnson's sick remarks, and had some things to say on Twitter ("X"), the first from Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree:

A Spooky Garden Chore, And Planting

The Impatient Gardener gives us some Fall garden chores (if you have a garden and are so inclined), including a spooky garden job, all cultivated with humor and some quips. She's from southeastern Wisconsin, so she might be a few days ahead of some of the rest of us in her scheduling. Strangely soothing and very normal 😊.

QOTD -- Christofascism

"... The term Christofascism may seem inflammatory. It is not. It is intended to provide the most accurate possible definition of what [House Speaker "MAGA Mike"] Johnson and those in his movement wish to achieve. Like other fascists they seek to impose by whatever means necessary their views on the whole of society even if that means undoing established laws and eliminating accepted freedoms. Christofascists do so in the name of advancing their Christian ideology, asserting that all in society must be guided by their views and values whether they adhere to them or not.

"Although Johnson was little known outside Republican congressional circles (and not that well known within them), he made it clear from his first moments as speaker who he was and what kind of speaker he would be. In his opening remarks, he even suggested it was divine intervention that made him the second in the line of succession to the U.S. presidency. He said, 'I don’t believe there are any coincidences in a matter like this. I believe that scripture, the Bible, is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority.'”  -- David Rothkopf, in The Daily Beast, writing about why new Christofascist Speaker of the House (second in line for the Presidency) is more dangerous than the Malignant Loser.  If any more reason was needed to flip the House back to Democrats in 2024, we don't know what it would be.

New York AG James Pursuing Ivanka's Testimony (UPDATED)

Yesterday afternoon, New York State's stellar Attorney General Letitia James filed a motion with Judge Arthur Engoron in the Trump civil business fraud case to compel the testimony of the Malignant Loser's lusted-after daughter Ivanka Trump.  Earlier this year, Ivanka Trump was dropped from the civil suit on statute of limitation grounds and improper service of subpoenas, but Attorney General James believes some circumstances contradict Ivanka's claim that she severed relations with the Trump Organization prior to the scope of the charges. From Newsweek:

"On Thursday, however, James filed a motion arguing that Ivanka Trump should still be compelled to testify in the trial, regardless of whether she was a defendant in the civil suit.

'Ms. Trump remains under the control of the Trump Organization, including through her ongoing and substantial business ties to the organization. Ms. Trump reappointed herself to a participating member of several Trump Organization entities following her departure from government,' James wrote.

Ivanka Trump only 'disclaims any connection' when asked to answer for her involvement with the Trump Organization, James alleged, adding that her efforts to distance herself from her father's business carry 'no legal weight.'

'She does not seem to be averse to her involvement in the family business when it comes to owning and collecting proceeds from the OPO sale, the Trump Organization purchasing insurance for her and her companies, managing her household staff and credit card bills, renting her apartment or even paying her legal fees in this action,' she wrote.

James also disputed Ivanka Trump's attorneys arguing she was not properly served a subpoena.

'As an initial matter, Ms. Trump tries to draw a distinction between whether the subpoena had been served on her individually or as an officer of the entities addressed beneath her name in the subpoena. All roads here lead to Rome; regardless of how the subpoenas are parsed, sufficient service was effected to compel Ms. Trump's testimony, whether individually or as an officer or agent of the corporate entities,' James wrote."  (our emphasis)

If you thought the Malignant Loser was agitated this past week during Michael Cohen's testimony and Judge Engoron's refusal to end the trial, his agitation level will go thermonuclear when his spoiled, lusted-after daughter has to testify for the State of New York under oath. He will violate his gag order in milliseconds.

UPDATE:  The judge has ruled she'll have to take the stand to testify.

Economy's "Blockbuster" 4.9 Percent Growth

ICYMI thanks to competing news, Bidenomics is producing blockbuster growth in the economy:

The U.S. economy grew by an annualized rate of 4.9 percent in the third quarter, the strongest pace since 2021, as spending — by families, businesses and the government — accelerated, even in the face of fast-rising borrowing costs.

New government data released Thursday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that gross domestic product expanded between July and September, capping five straight quarters of growth and eluding a long-feared recession.

The economy’s resilience is a product of a strong job market and extra pandemic savings, which have made it possible for people to keep spending despite inflation and rising interest rates. Robust government hiring — including 214,000 new jobs between July and September — also added to overall strength.

What’s particularly remarkable is that the economy grew so strongly amid the highest interest rates in more than 15 years, as the Federal Reserve tries to cool the economy down to curb inflation.

“It’s enough to knock me over with a feather,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG. “We’ve had the most aggressive credit tightening from the Federal Reserve since the 1980s, and — guess what — the economy’s accelerating. We really underestimated how much consumers could keep spending.”

The recent surge is a sign that some of the Biden administration’s policies are helping juice the economy at a critical time. Economists say it’s clear that recent investments in infrastructure are paying off: Robust manufacturing construction and government spending drove much of last quarter’s growth, and households have continued to benefit from historic job gains...  (our emphasis)

Of course, this is hardly going to penetrate the skulls of many Americans, who rely on "feels" and Facebook gnomes to tell them how bad things must be.  We live in a deeply mis- connected and stupid age.  But, for what it's worth, thanks Biden!

UAW Reaches Tentative Agreement With Ford

There's big, and very welcome news on the United Auto Workers strike against the Big Three automakers:

The United Auto Workers union said Wednesday it has reached a tentative contract agreement with Ford that could be a breakthrough toward ending the nearly 6-week-old strikes against Detroit automakers.

The four-year deal, which still has to be approved by 57,000 union members at the company, could bring a close to the union’s series of strikes at targeted factories run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis.

The Ford deal could set the pattern for agreements with the other two automakers, where workers will remain on strike. The UAW called on all workers at Ford to return to their jobs and said that will put pressure on GM and Stellantis to bargain. Announcements on how to do that will come later.

“We told Ford to pony up, and they did,” President Shawn Fain said in a video address to members. “We won things no one thought possible.” He added that Ford put 50% more money on the table than it did before the strike started on Sept. 15.

UAW Vice President Chuck Browning, the chief negotiator with Ford, said workers will get a 25% general wage increase, plus cost of living raises that will put the pay increase over 30%, to above $40 per hour for top-scale assembly plant workers by the end of the contract.

Previously Ford, Stellantis and General Motors had all offered 23% pay increases. When the talks started Ford offered 9%.

Assembly workers will get 11% upon ratification, almost equal to all of the wage increases workers have seen since 2007, Browning said...

Chances are now very good that a settlement will now be reached with General Motors and Stellantis. Not having the strike drag on into 2024 works to the benefit of everyone (except the Republican Party).  Union president Fain put the tentative deal into a broader perspective:

“This agreement sets us on a new path to make things right at Ford, at the Big Three, and across the auto industry. Together, we are turning the tide for the working class in this country,” Fain said.

Fain's strategy and the union's solidarity carried the day.  Well done.

Gingrich Spreads Lies After Maine Mass Shooting

The horrific mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, yesterday where the death toll is estimated at 22 with dozens more injured, should be another wake up call for the need to ban assault rifles and to expand background checks, especially for people who are disturbed, as is the alleged shooter, purportedly. But you can expect the Republican / Christofascist right to jump to the defense of the gun industry, as in this "we need more guns" response on Fox "News" from the despicable villain Newt Gingrich:

"Frankly, in states that have conceal carry and other permits, constitutional carry permits, you have a much more rapid response to these kind of people who are crazy.

And we have no idea what this person’s motivation was, but I think we have to assume, as we move forward, that people... and by the way, this also applies to what happened in Israel when Hamas attacked... we have to have a greater ability for our citizens to protect themselves, because it’s clear that law enforcement comes in after the massacre. But law enforcement’s almost never there to stop the massacre.

This has been true in Europe. It's been true here. It's been true in Israel. So I think we have to think about a whole new strategy, because these kind of people are extraordinarily dangerous, are willing to kill others, have no sense of decency, and frankly, you have to stop them as early as possible to minimize the loss of individual lives."

He's lying as usual. The proliferation of military style assault rifles over the past two decades has been followed by an increase in mass shootings, which are rarely stopped by "good guys with guns" on site. His suggestion that Europe also experiences mass shootings on the scale approaching the U.S. because people don't go around armed is another fable, as research has shown. European nations don't have the permissive gun laws that the U.S. does, and therefore not the level of gun violence. Same with Japan and Canada.

Gingrich won't be the only right-wing purveyor of lies claiming that if more citizens were allowed to open carry firearms, we'd be safer. He and his right-wing cohort never wonder how police arriving on the chaotic scene of a shootout with a multiple "good guys with guns" could sort out the situation quickly enough to avoid even more mass casualties. Finally, who would be surprised if the alleged shooter were part of the same political movement as Gingrich? Not us.

UPDATE:  Not surprised at all:

... Liam Kent, who appeared on NBC News, grew up in Bowdoin, Maine, where [suspected shooter Robert] Card lived, and said Card and his family are “gun fanatics.”

“It’s known in the town to stay away from them and to not approach them,” Kent said. “If you see them, just turn around and walk away.”  [snip]

On X, formerly Twitter, Card often liked posts from former President Donald Trump, conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson, and a professor who taught about terrorism, according to Heavy. Card had liked a March post from Donald Trump Jr. following a mass shooting in Nashville that read, “rather than talking about guns we should be talking about lunatics pushing their gender affirming bulls**t on our kids?” Card’s X account was suspended after the shooting...

Fits the profile of so many of these mass murderers.
