Polls: Trump, MAGA Republicans In Big Trouble

Nine months into his second catastrophic regime, and less than a week away from elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, polls are telling a story of a deeply unpopular presidency and a deeply unpopular MAGA Republican cult.

The Economist's poll on net approval compared with other recent Presidents (underwater 18%):

They also show the MF underwater in every swing state that voted for him and Texas:

Quinnipiac on independents overwhelming support for Democrats (+20):

Gallup on what party voters think is better to keep the country prosperous (Dems +4):

It's becoming more and more apparent to Americans that the Malignant Fascist badly overplayed his autocratic hand at the expense of the economy, their rights, and democracy.   Expect to see some more crumbling of the MAGA movement (already showing up re the Epstein files coverup, tariffs, and the Argentine beef / bailout debacle).  To hasten that, voters need to send a message at every election, town hall, and No Kings event in the future.

Straight Up: No ICE!

A federal judge in Chicago is attempting to rein in Trump's personal goon squad and its local gauleiter.  From AP:

A judge on Tuesday ordered a senior U.S. Border Patrol official to meet her each evening to discuss the government’s immigration crackdown in the Chicago area, an extraordinary step following weeks of street confrontations, tear gas volleys and complaints of excessive force.

“Yes, ma’am,” responded Greg Bovino, who has become the face of the Trump administration’s immigration sweeps in America’s big cities.

Bovino got an earful from U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis as soon as he settled into the witness chair in his green uniform.

Ellis quickly expressed concerns about video and other images from an illegal immigration drive that has produced more than 1,800 arrests since September. The hearing is the latest in a lawsuit by news outlets and protesters who say agents have used too much force, including tear gas, during demonstrations.

“My role is not to tell you that you can or cannot enforce validly passed laws by Congress. … My role is simply to see that in the enforcement of those laws, the agents are acting in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution,” the judge said...

The latest example of ICE thugs gone wild:

Ellis zeroed in on reports that Border Patrol agents disrupted a children’s Halloween parade with tear gas on the city’s Northwest Side over the weekend. Neighbors had gathered in the street as someone was arrested.

“Those kids were tear-gassed on their way to celebrate Halloween in their local school parking lot,” Ellis said. “And I can only imagine how terrified they were. These kids, you can imagine, their sense of safety was shattered on Saturday. And it’s going to take a long time for that to come back, if ever.”...

One more example for good measure:

A federal agent blatantly violated a court order against using excessive force against journalists and protesters last Thursday by pointing a gun in a veteran’s face, saying “Bang, bang” and “You’re dead, liberal.”

The Chicago Headline Club, a nonprofit representing journalists in the Chicago area, filed a complaint in federal court after the incident, which took place in the city’s Little Village neighborhood. Local residents had gathered to observe and protest a large presence of federal agents in the area, and Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino did not respond well or care to take the earlier court order into consideration.

According to the complaint, combat veteran Chris Gentry was “lawfully standing on the side of the road voicing his opposition as agents were driving by in their vehicles.” That’s when an agent pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him...

Chicago and other major metropolitan areas have plenty of people capable of recording ICE violations of the Constitution, or just simply bad or illegal behavior.  We wonder how much more of this is happening in less populated places, or at night, or out of range of cameras.  This bunch of violent hoodlums masquerading as law enforcement needs to be disbanded -- and some prosecuted -- as soon as the people of this country retake it.  Then, maybe deport Greg Bovino to Italy, if they'll have him.

QOTD -- Testing, Testing

"... The general public is not likely to get an accurate accounting of Trump's results on either of these tests, or on any other tests he might have had. And the general public certainly isn't going to get an accurate answer to, arguably, the most important question of all: Why did Trump have the tests in the first place? Neither an MRI nor a cognitive test are routine parts of an annual physical, much less a person's second physical in 6 months. They are only administered if there is a reason for them. So, what prompted Trump (well, his people) to make the appointment?

"We are a little surprised, actually, that Trump shared as much information as he did. Maybe he developed a case of loose lips, as he so often does. Maybe he was pleased enough by the results that he felt the need to do a little peacocking. Either he doesn't realize, or he doesn't care, that announcing 'Yep! I had an unexpected MRI! And another cognitive test!' is not a good look, no matter how 'well' he did on them." -- Christopher Bates ("Z"), at Electoral-vote.com, on the curious cognitive and MRI tests given the cankled, sundowning moron Malignant Fascist recently during his second "annual physical" this year.  Never a cognitive overachiever on his best days, nor a healthy physical specimen, the Malignant Fascist must be in worse shape than he even appears to be in public for his staff to arrange these tests (and tell him the cognitive test is really an IQ test!).  Time to take away the nuclear football and give him one made by Wilson and tell him it contains the nuclear codes?

Architecture And Authoritarianism

There's an excellent article in The Conversation by archaeologist R. Grant Gilmore III about the relationship between architectural styles and authoritarian rule that points out several things that deranged narcissist the Malignant Fascist is doing with his makeover of Washington: the gaudy royal ballroom that the East Wing had to make way for, and the "Arc de Trump" at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.  Some excerpts from the article, with our emphasis added:

"In his first term as president, and even more so today, Donald Trump has pushed to an extreme legacy-building through architecture and heritage policy. He is remaking the White House physically and metaphorically in his image, consistent with his long record of putting his name on buildings as a developer.

In December 2020, Trump issued an executive order declaring classical and traditional architectural styles the “preferred” design for new federal buildings. The order derided Brutalist and modernist structures as inconsistent with national values.

Now, Trump is seeking to roll back inclusive historical narratives at U.S. parks and monuments. And he is reviving sanitized myths about America’s history of slavery, misogyny and Manifest Destiny, for use in museums, textbooks and public schools."

Dictators and authoritarians use architecture in building monuments to themselves, and the MF's massive neediness has meant the construction of temples to his own ego:

"Many leaders throughout history have built “temples to power” while erasing or overshadowing the memory of their predecessors – a practice known as damnatio memoriae, or condemnation to oblivion. [snip]

Albert Speer’s and Hermann Giesler’s monumental neoclassical designs in Nazi Germany, such as the party rally grounds in Nuremberg, were intended to overwhelm the individual and glorify the regime. And Josef Stalin’s Soviet Union suppressed avant-garde experimentation in favor of monumental “socialist realist” architecture, projecting permanence and centralized power.

Now, Trump has proposed building his own triumphal arch in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial, as a symbol to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence."

Gilmore explains that the MF is using architecture to send a message of exclusion and dominance:

"In remaking the White House and prescribing the style and content of many federal sites, Trump is targeting not just buildings but the stories they tell.

By challenging narratives that depart from white, Anglo-Saxon origin myths, Trump is using his power to roll back decades of work toward creating a more inclusive national history.

These actions ignore the fact that America’s strength lies in its identity as a nation of immigrants."

There's much more in Gilmore's article that's well worth the read.  It clarifies what the MF is intending to not only build, but to destroy in his wake.

Star Trek And Space Cadets

There's a fight developing within the lawless Malignant Fascist's regime involving Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and South Afrikaner white supremacist sociopath and exploding rocket maker Elon "Leon" Musk over who should run NASA.  Of course, Musk has a vested interest in who runs the agency, since much of his business involves SpaceX, which is making significant money from the U.S. space program.  Sophia Tesfaye writing in Salon.com is watching the developing feud:

"Musk, who had a rather messy departure from his official government role in May, is once again making waves with a social media broadside against another Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. With Trump’s man is under attack by the MAGA movement’s favorite billionaire, loyalties are being tested.

Duffy, who was picked to helm the Transportation Department over the objections of Howard Lutnick, the billionaire who ran Trump’s transition and now serves as Commerce Secretary, was selected by Trump to become the acting administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in July. (Duffy reportedly wanted the job of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.) Trump has proposed cutting more than $6 billion from NASA’s budget, and Musk’s DOGE cuts have already impacted the agency. Around 4,000 NASA employees accepted deferred resignation program offers, which reduced the agency’s staff by nearly 20%. At the first Cabinet meeting in late February, Duffy accused Musk of pushing to lay off air traffic controllers, an accusation the SpaceX founder denied.

“Elon — or no one else — is the secretary,” Duffy told the New York Post’s Miranda Devine of the skirmish. “I run this department, and again, I didn’t want someone on the outside trying to tell me to fire people… [M]y position was, we are not going to fire air traffic controllers.”

According to Steve Bannon, 'This is why Trump picked Sean Duffy as interim head of NASA. When everyone was worshipping Elmo Musk, Duffy called him a liar to his face about laying off air traffic controllers. Now that Duffy’s in the room, SpaceX contracts are about to get real scrutiny.'" (our emphasis)

We can all applaud the idea that SpaceX contracts are going to get more scrutiny, regardless of who proposes it.  Musk has been feeding at the public trough for some time, and it's time for his SpaceX venture to be well scrutinized.  The damage from the Malignant Fascist's cuts is impacting not only space cadet Musk's visions of space flight grandeur, but is causing serious delays in flight operations due to budget cuts in air traffic controllers and TSA staff.  The growing tiff between Duffy and Musk is certain to exacerbate the problems.

Government Shutdown's Ripple Effect Increasing

The ripple effect of the Trump / Republican government shutdown is being increasingly felt as we enter the fourth week of their shutdown.  The Associated Press reports that Los Angeles International Airport and airports in other cities like Chicago, Newark, Dallas and Washington had to temporarily halt flights due to a shortage of air traffic controllers:

"Flights departing for Los Angeles International Airport were halted briefly due to a staffing shortage at a Southern California air traffic facility, the Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday, when the agency also reported staffing-related delays in Chicago, Washington and Newark, New Jersey.

The FAA issued a temporary ground stop at one of the world’s busiest airports soon after U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy predicted that travelers would see more flights delayed and canceled in the coming days as the nation’s air traffic controllers work without pay during the federal government shutdown."

Pipsqueaker of the House Mike "Little" Johnson is also using the shutdown as an excuse to not swear in newly-elected Rep. Adelina Grijalva of Arizona, who would be the 218th vote necessary to pass the discharge petition to require the Justice Department to release the Epstein - Trump files.

In another development, the Malignant Fascist has announced that $5 billion in contingency funds won't be used to provide food aid into November, despite "finding" $20 billion in Federal funds to purchase Argentinian pesos to prop up his authoritarian friend Javier Milei.

The MF's regime and their drones in Congress haven't shown an interest in backing off of their plans to cut health insurance support to millions of Americans and other damaging acts, while imposing hardship on thousands of Federal workers, and private sector support personnel across the Government.  The public will get a good taste of what that means in their lives in the days and weeks ahead.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

The resistance is becoming an uprising.

Last Saturday [October 18], more than 7 million of us poured into the streets to reject Trump’s dictatorship. That’s more than 2 percent of the adult population of the United States.

Historical studies suggest that 3.5 percent of a population engaged in sustained nonviolent resistance can topple even the most brutal dictatorships — such as Chile under Pinochet and Serbia under Milosevic.

Which means we’re almost there.

Other evidence of the backlash is all around us. Seven of the nine universities Trump selected to join his extortion compact — offering preferential treatment for federal funds in exchange for a pledge to support his agenda — have rejected it.

Most major airports have refused to show Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s propaganda video attacking Democrats for the government shutdown.

Almost all of America’s news outlets have refused to sign Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s media loyalty oath.

Trump’s destruction of the East Wing of the White House (after promising he wouldn’t) and posting an AI video of himself shitting on America is causing even loyal Trumpers to worry he’s losing his marbles.

I believe future generations will look back on this scourge and see not just what was destroyed but also what was born.

Even prior to Trump, American democracy was deeply flawed. The moneyed interests were drowning out everyone else. Inequality was reaching record levels. Corruption — legalized bribery through campaign contributions — was the norm. The bottom 90 percent were getting nowhere because the system was rigged against them.

Many of you are now sowing the seeds of fundamental reform.

Whether it’s demonstrating as you did last Saturday, appearing at Republican town halls, jamming the Capitol and White House switchboards, generating mountains of emails and letters, protecting the vulnerable in your communities, or going door-to-door for candidates like Zohran Mamdani, your activism is paying off.

The backlash against Trump is growing. His approval rating has sunk to a level not seen since Richard Nixon last sat in the White House, according to the latest Gallup poll, out Wednesday...

But, if January 6 was prologue, we know the Malignant Fascist and his regime aren't going to cede power willingly.  If and when that time comes, we'll find out what our true character is as a nation.

The bad:

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that mail-in ballots and early voting would be prohibited for the upcoming midterm elections, citing false claims that the 2020 election had been “rigged,” despite having no authority to outlaw such voting practices.

“Look what happened to our Country when a Crooked Moron became our ‘President!’ We now know everything,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “I hope the DOJ pursues this with as much ‘gusto’ as befitting the biggest SCANDAL in American history! If not, it will happen again, including the upcoming Midterms. No mail-in or ‘Early’ Voting, Yes to Voter ID!”

Trump had previously vowed to eradicate mail-in ballots back in August, and again without having the authority to do so. In his social media post Sunday, however, he also vowed to eradicate early voting, and singled out California for its upcoming ballot measure to redraw its congressional districts, a measure passed in response to Texas’ redistricting that was designed to bolster the GOP’s numbers in Congress.

“Watch how totally dishonest the California Prop Vote is! Millions of Ballots being ‘shipped,’” Trump wrote, with it being unclear what “millions of ballots” he was referring to. “GET SMART REPUBLICANS, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!”

The Trump administration has deployed Justice Department officials to monitor California’s upcoming election in a move that critics have decried as a form of “voter intimidation.”

“What’s worse, the NBA Players cheating at cards, and probably much else, or the Democrats cheating on Elections. The 2020 Presidential Election, being Rigged and Stolen, is a far bigger SCANDAL,” Trump wrote.

Oh, the projection!  Of course, the demented dolt has no authority to do any of this.  Someone should also try to get it into his orange pumpkinhead that he was President in 2020, so any "rigging" would have to have been done by him and his lackeys, not Biden (the "Crooked Moron" in case you thought he was referring to himself).  This, like most of his recent screeds and his urging Republicans to gerrymander Congressional districts in their states, reeks of desperation.

The ugly:

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Saturday that food benefits under one of the country’s biggest social assistance programs will not be issued in November amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The shutdown was in its 25th day at the time of the announcement, which came after more than 200 Democrats in the US House of Representatives on Friday called on USDA to draw on its emergency reserves to fund November food benefits.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress remain at an impasse over how to fund and reopen the federal government.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA said in a post on its website. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” on 1 November.

More than 41 million depend on the monthly payments, according to the USDA. In some states, such as New Mexico, dependence on the program is as high as 21% of residents, it said.

According to a memo seen by Reuters, the department indicated that it would not draw on emergency reserves to fund food benefits in November.

A statement from the leader of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said the Trump administration had the opportunity to act sooner to ensure benefits don’t run out.

“It could have, and should have, taken steps weeks ago to be ready to use these funds,” the statement from Sharon Parrott said, as reported by the Hill. “Instead, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to exert pressure on Senate Democrats to vote in favor of a spending bill that would reopen the federal government.

Governors in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergencies this week to make funds available to help with hunger relief in anticipation of Snap benefits not being issued in November.  (our emphasis)

Using food aid as "leverage" is the tactic of a soulless fascist regime.  The MF and the smug millionaires and psychopaths in charge of the dystopia we're living in have likely never been hungry (and we know the Malignant Fascist has never missed a meal), and don't particularly care about those who might be.  They also don't particularly care if millions of Americans lose their health care benefits, which is, after all, what Democrats are fighting for.

Across The Universe, Cont. -- Starburst

From NASA/ ESA, October 23, 2025
: Featured in this NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope Picture of the Month is a nearby galaxy that outshines the Milky Way. This galaxy, called Messier 82 (M82) or the Cigar Galaxy, is situated just 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.

Despite being smaller than the Milky Way, M82 is five times as luminous as our home galaxy and forms stars ten times faster. M82 is classified as a starburst galaxy because it is forming new stars at a rate much faster than expected for a galaxy of its mass, especially at its centre. In visible-light images of M82, the central hotbed of activity is obscured by a network of thick and dusty clouds. Webb’s Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam) has drawn back these clouds, revealing the full brilliance of the galactic centre.

What caused M82’s burst of star formation? The answer likely lies with its neighbour, the larger spiral galaxy M81. Researchers suspect that the two galaxies have interacted gravitationally, sending gas pouring into M82’s centre millions of years ago. The influx of gas provided the raw material for new stars to form — and form they did! M82 is home to more than 100 super star clusters, some of which are still in the process of forming and are blanketed with dense, dusty gas. Super star clusters are more massive and luminous than typical star clusters; these each contain hundreds of thousands of stars.

A previous Webb NIRCam image of M82 was released in 2024. The earlier image focused on the very core of the galaxy, where individual clusters of young stars stand out against the clumps and tendrils of gas. This new image takes a broader view of M82’s brilliant centre, capturing the light of billions of stars as well as the glow of organic molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs.

Researchers used the new Webb data to identify plumes traced by the emission from PAH molecules. Each plume is only about 160 light-years wide, and the Webb images show that these plumes are made up of multiple individual clouds that are 16–49 light-years across — an incredible level of detail enabled by Webb’s sensitive instruments. These clouds appear to have been caught up in the galaxy’s powerful outflowing winds and whisked away from the galactic disc.

Ultimately, this phenomenon points back to the galaxy’s remarkable abundance of massive star clusters: as these massive clusters form, their newborn stars sear the surrounding gas with high-energy radiation and particles, launching the outflowing wind that is traced by this NIRCam image.

[Image Description: An image of the central part of galaxy M82. The galaxy’s disc extends from the top to the bottom of the image, emitting a blue-white glow. Gas erupts from the brightly shining centre, forming an hourglass-shaped plume of red and orange dust clouds to the left and right. Ridges and cavities in the gas are visible in great detail. Many distant galaxies can be seen in the background, as well as tiny pinprick stars in M82.]

Sunday Reflection -- Protecting Our Values

“One thing we know for sure is that change is certain. Progress is not. Progress depends on the choices we make today for tomorrow and on whether we meet our challenges and protect our values.”  -- Hillary Rodham Clinton, First Lady, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and Democratic nominee for President, in her book "Living History."  Born in Chicago, IL, on this day in 1947, Clinton is one of the most accomplished American public figures of her or any other generation.  Her words, published in 2003, are especially prescient and relevant today, when the challenges we face are perhaps more daunting than at almost any other time in our history.  Trump and his fascistic Trumpism will someday be gone;  that's the nature of time and change.  We must be certain that the choices we're making today ensure that our future protects our values better than they've been protected up to now.
