Vote On Obamacare Repeal Postponed (UPDATED)

Despite saying the vote on the Republican bill to repeal Obamacare would happen today regardless of whether they had the votes to pass it, the Republican leadership just announced it was postponing the vote.

Because they didn't have the votes. In. Their. Own. Caucus. The problem being, one part of the Republican Party is o.k. with dropping 24 million people from health insurance coverage, while an opposing wing thinks that not nearly cruel enough.

Meanwhile, time for more expert negotiating and arm twisting from the master of the deal?
Trump has increasingly come to own the health care proposal, even making a direct pitch to members during a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday. The continued opposition to the bill may be the first signal that Trump’s political capital doesn’t run very deep in the House GOP conference, and that Republicans, particularly conservative Republicans, aren’t afraid to cross the president.
Trump's winning so much, he's maybe getting tired of winning.

UPDATE: The Congressional Budget Office scored the latest version of the abomination and, surprise!, it's still as vicious as the first bill:
The score by the Congressional Budget Office projects federal deficits would be lowered by $150 billion over 10 years but still projects that 24 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2026 than under the Affordable Care Act. A previous version of the bill would have reduced the deficit by an estimated $337 billion by 2026. The analysis comes as House Republicans continue making changes to try to line up enough votes to pass the bill.

UPDATE II:  The Giant Toddler is "done negotiating" with his Congressional Republicans and wants a vote on Friday. Waaah!

Stop TrumpCare! (UPDATED)

Today, Republicans are planing to bring the so- called "American Health Care Act" (TrumpCare) to the floor of the House for a vote. While only a day ago it appeared opposition from the farthest right Republicans (the Freedumb "Freedom" Caucus) plus a few endangered Republicans in swing districts might have caused the bill to fail, things may have changed over night. To placate the hard right members, the bill has been made even more cruel and farcical than it was originally.

Jon Chait summarizes the benefits in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) that the hard right Republicans may have succeeded in stripping from "essential benefits" health insurance must provide:
• Outpatient care without a hospital admission, known as ambulatory patient services
• Emergency services
• Hospitalization
• Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care
• Mental health and substance use disorder services, including counseling and psychotherapy
• Prescription drugs
• Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, which help people with injuries and disabilities to recover
• Laboratory services
• Preventive care, wellness services, and chronic disease management
• Pediatric services, including oral and vision care for children
Needless to say, this would open up a new market for cut- rate, no- coverage insurance, creating a Social Darwinist redistribution of health care costs. As Chait goes on to describe:
... Eliminating essential health benefits does not lower the cost of health coverage, it redistributes it. If men, or women past childbearing age, no longer share the cost of childbirth in their insurance premiums, then the cost of insurance for somebody who might have a baby would become wildly expensive. Healthy people can save on costs by buying plans that don’t cover all sorts of chronic diseases, but then people who do have those conditions would be stuck paying for their own treatment.
A system without essential benefits would make the law’s protections for people with preexisting conditions meaningless. Insurers couldn’t turn you away if you had a pricy condition, but the only people who wanted to buy plans covering them would be sick and expensive, making covering their conditions unaffordable — just like before Obamacare existed. Eliminating these reforms would enable young, healthy people to enjoy lower premiums, as long as they remained young and healthy. It would essentially jack up the massive redistribution from the old and sick to the young and healthy already in Trumpcare to new heights.
There's still time to make a call today to your Representative (especially if he/she is a Republican). Calls matter a lot.  They affect votes. The House of Representatives switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. Ask for your Representative's number and when you get through, tell them to vote NO.

UPDATE:  Once again, public opinion is on our side --
American voters disapprove 56 - 17 percent, with 26 percent undecided, of the Republican health care plan to replace Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Support among Republicans is a lackluster 41 - 24 percent.
If their U.S. Senator or member of Congress votes to replace Obamacare with the Republican health care plan, 46 percent of voters say they will be less likely to vote for that person, while 19 percent say they will be more likely and 29 percent say this vote won't matter, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds.
Disapproval of the Republican plan is 56 - 22 percent among men, 56 - 13 percent among women, 54 - 20 percent among white voters, 64 - 10 percent among non-white voters, 80 - 3 percent among Democrats, 58 - 14 percent among independent voters and by margins of 2-1 or more in every age group. (our emphasis)
Pretty definitive.

Tweet Of The Day - The Three Pronged Obamacare Repeal

Neo- fascist sociopath Donald "Rump" Trump and Ayn Rand acolyte/ weasel Rep. Paul "Lyin'" Ryan (R- Galt's Gulch) are furiously whipping votes to pass their TrumpCare/ RepubliCare bill in the House. There's a core of Republicans who feel that 24 million Americans losing their health insurance and gutting Medicaid in the process isn't enough pain; then again there are people like this meathead who'll vote for the bill since Rump blew him a kiss.

Punching down at the afflicted is just the appetizer. Always keep in mind what this is all about.

Trump Voters Give Him Credit For What Obamacare Gave Them (Sad!)

Why we can't have nice things anymore, part infinity.

The name says it all:  Charla McComic.  Her "knowledge" about the politics of health care insurance is, well, McComical:
Soon after Charla McComic’s son lost his job, his health-insurance premium dropped from $567 per month to just $88, a “blessing from God” that she believes was made possible by President Trump.
“I think it was just because of the tax credit,” said McComic, 52, a former first-grade teacher who traveled to Trump’s Wednesday night rally in Nashville from Lexington, Tenn., with her daughter, mother, aunt and cousin.
The price change was actually thanks to a subsidy made possible by former president Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which is still in place, not by the tax credits proposed by Republicans as part of the health-care bill still being considered by Congress.
The article goes on to describe other dimbulbs' perception of reality on TrumpCare and the Affordable Care Act. It's just more examples of what we have been reading and hearing ad nauseam before and after the election: the clueless, low information, "economically anxious" Trump voter who hasn't the vaguest notion what's in his or her best interest and votes accordingly. In the unlikely event TrumpCare goes into effect and crushes them, these chumps will still fall for any line fed them by the orange shitgibbon ("It's all Obama's fault!").

As they say, there's no cure for stupid. It's not covered under the Affordable Care Act, and even if it was, it certainly wouldn't cure the McComically stupid McComic and her fellow Stormtrumpers. It's in their tribal DNA.  To paraphrase Mr. Pierce, we empathize, but we don't sympathize. Sic transit gloria, America.

Tweet Of The Day - Turn On

Trump White House: CBO Findings Wrong! Even More Will Lose Health Insurance Under TrumpCare!

Oops!

Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated!  Especially these chuckleheads:
Just after the Congressional Budget Office said it estimates that under the Republican health-care bill 14 million Americans will lose their health insurance next year, and 24 million will lose their coverage by the end of the decade, the White House said it disagrees “strenuously” with that analysis.
“We believe that our plan will cover more individuals at a lower cost and give them the choices that they want for the coverage that they want for themselves and for their families, not that the government forces them to buy,” Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price explained on Monday.
Hours later, the White House’s internal analysis of the American Health Care Act leaked. It confirms that the Trump administration disagrees with the CBO’s findings — but not because AHCA will “cover more individuals.” The executive branch estimates that 26 million people would lose coverage within the next decade — more than the CBO’s estimate of 24 million.
 Wow. Just wow.

CBO: 14 Million Could Lose Health Insurance By 2018 Under TrumpCare, 24 Million By 2026

The Congressional Budget Office just released its scoring of the Republican tax cut for the wealthy* disguised as the "American Health Care Act" (TrumpCare/ RepubliCare) and, well, it's more dystopian than was feared:
An estimated 14 million Americans could lose their health care coverage in 2018, and 24 million by 2026 under a Republican bill to replace Obamacare, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said Monday in an analysis that could make the controversial legislation even tougher for GOP leaders to push through Congress.
"Some of those people would choose not to have insurance because they chose to be covered by insurance under current law only to avoid paying the penalties, and some people would forgo insurance in response to higher premiums," the CBO said in its analysis.
The number of Americans who lose their coverage could rise to 21 million in 2020 and 24 million in 2026 as the GOP plan phases out Obamacare's Medicaid expansion, the CBO said.
This needs to be hung around the neck of every Republican running for office at the national, state and local level in 2018 and beyond. It's the distillation of their "afflicting the afflicted and comforting the comfortable" right- wing philosophy, and they need to be held accountable for their "movement's" nihilism. If the Democratic Party can't pull that off, it's not worth calling itself a political party.

But, that's not all, folks:

Focusing on your average Trump voter:

How big a hike?

Or, put another way --

No wonder Republicans wanted (irony alert) to ram this down the throats of Democrats in Congress, and were working overtime to discredit CBO in advance of this scoring. The only places this could be considered a triumph are Galt's Gulch and the Anthems of the world.

* Wherein Charlie Pierce warns us not to fall for the Republican's "bogus metric" of improved access to sell their plan, thusly: "Right now, as I sit here, I have 'access' to a Cabriolet. Don't have the money to buy it, though."

Saturday Morning Reading / Viewing

Let's dive right in (as always, please read articles in their entirety).

-- Martin Longman sees an opportunity for Democrats in Congress to extract some concessions from Republicans who will possibly need their votes on a crucial, recurring matter:
The Democrats have very little leverage to influence policy or stop legislation they don’t like, and so far they aren’t being consulted or asked to provide support for any of Trump’s policies.
It’s an odd thing that Trump ran successfully by trashing the Republican Establishment but then decided to govern in a way that is completely dependent on them. The Democrats are correct to respond with unflinching resistance, but they should at least explore if the possible inability of the Republicans to raise the debt ceiling on their own will present them with an opportunity to have a say on policy. They have leverage, so the question is really what they can achieve with that leverage.
It could be as simple as helping craft an infrastructure plan that isn’t a giant looting scheme or something more mundane like a slate of nominees placed on bipartisan commissions. Whatever it is, it shouldn’t come cheap. The Democratic leadership needs to figure out what their “ask” will be. And, needless to say, if Mitch McConnell eliminates the filibuster for Supreme Court judges, the Democrats should be willing to let the world burn before they give any votes to raise the debt ceiling. (our emphasis)
-- The White (Supremacist) House and some toadies in the media are giving neo- fascist malignancy Donald "Rump" Trump credit (a "Trump bump") for the February jobs report that showed a preliminary gain of 235,000 jobs.  Ben White has the context (click on image to enlarge):

-- Paul Krugman weighs in on RepubliCare/ TrumpCare ("a dog's breakfast" bill so bad "its awfulness is almost surreal") and concludes:
Given the sick joke of a health plan, you might ask what happened to all those proclamations that Obamacare was a terrible, no good system that Republicans would immediately replace with something far better — not to mention Donald Trump’s promises of “insurance for everybody” and “great health care.”
But the answer, of course, is that they were all lying, all along — and they still are. On this, at least, Republican unity remains impressively intact.
Can't argue that if's there's one thing Republicans are adept at, it's lying.

-- They're also adept at monumental, soulless hypocrisy:

Lock him up! Lock him up!

-- Finally, Steven Harper at Bill Moyers.com has a timeline of the Trump- Russia connection that is updated periodically.  It's a good reference and something to track as the scandal unfolds. Wear a mask, though, to protect you from all the smoke.

Health Insurance "Reformer" Paul Ryan Doesn't Understand... "Insurance" (UPDATED)

If you are under the impression that the author of RepubliCare/ TrumpCare, House Speaker Paul "Lyin'" Ryan (R- Galt's Gulch), understands the basic concept of "insurance," please stop what you're doing and read this or this.  Or you can see for yourself, based on what he said today in his Health Insurance for Dummies (By Dummies) press conference seminar:
The fatal conceit of Obamacare is that we’re just gonna MAKE everybody buy our health insurance at the federal government level. Young and healthy people are going to go into the market and pay for the older, sicker people. So the young, healthy person’s going to be made to buy healthcare, and they’re gonna pay for the person, you know, who gets breast cancer in her 40s, or gets heart disease in his 50s. So take a look at this chart. The red slice here are what I would call people with pre-existing conditions, people who have real healthcare problems. The blue is the rest of the people in the individual market, that’s the market where people don’t get health insurance with their jobs, or they buy it themselves. The whole idea of Obamacare is the people in the blue side pay for the people on the red side. The people who are healthy pay for the people who are sick. It’s not working, and that’s why it’s in a death spiral. (our emphasis)
No wonder his Obamacare repeal bill is a steaming pile;  the genius thinks you should only start paying for insurance when you get sick. Until then, you're young and free, so nothing bad ever happens to you and you never get old, so no health insurance, no worries! Let the old and sick pay for themselves -- or not! Good luck! Freedumb! The end.

(Oh, and surprise! he's lying about Obamacare being in a "death spiral.")

To summarize, he's a dick and a moron. You're welcome.

UPDATE: Of course, given his affinity for the selfish philosophy of Ayn Rand, it's altogether possible he does understand the concept of insurance and is opposed to it because it requires someone to do something (pay premiums) for someone else's benefit (health care) without immediate benefit to himself. That would add "sociopath" to our descriptors above.

Video Clip Of The Day - "An Act Of Malice"

During yesterday's House Energy and Commerce Committee meeting on the dystopian RepubliCare/ TrumpCare bill, Rep. Joseph Kennedy III (D-MA) had this to say (before he was cut off by sociopathic tea bagger appeaser Rep. Greg "Shutdown" Walden (Weasel- OR)):

This is what we need to hear over and over from Democrats in the House and Senate (as well as in the states).  You're on the high moral and political ground. Act like it. (Not like this.)
