Weekend Music -- Back Pages

Going through my back pages (yes) of years of Weekend Music/ Song offerings made me think about the pleasure of reliving past joys, musical ones in this instance.  So, rather than another first- time offering, here are some from years past -- some well known, others not -- that we liked then and now.

We're going to group this collection around music performed by female artists, with the date and the link to when it originally appeared in Hackwhackers.  We might do the same next Friday with either random choices or another thematic grouping.  Hope you enjoy.

Weekend New Year's Music Twofer

From British folk singer (and early Apple Records recording artist) Mary Hopkin, her cover of Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (which was the B- side to her 1968 debut single, "Those Were The Days"). The song had been an international hit for The Byrds in 1965.

From his 1974 "Dark Horse" album, George Harrison rings out the old, rings in the new with "Ding Dong, Ding Dong." Among those playing on the record with Harrison are Ringo Starr on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass, Jim Keltner also on drums, Ron Wood on guitar, and Alvin Lee on guitar.  The video was filmed at Harrison's Friar Park estate.

Weekend Music Twofer

Heard this on satellite radio the other day -- Welsh singer Mary Hopkin's "Ocean Song," from her 1971 album "Earth Song/Ocean Song."  You may remember her as one of the first artists signed to the Beatles' Apple record label and for her first international hit, "Those Were The Days."  But we can't let "Ocean Song" stand on its own, so here's the companion piece also:  "Earth Song."  Both songs, though they sound like traditional English/Welsh folk ballads, were written by American songwriter Liz Thorsen.  Hope you enjoy.
