International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorates the victims of the Holocaust and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.  More than 6 million Jews -- two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population -- and millions of others were exterminated by the Nazis and their collaborators between 1933 and 1945.

From the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum:

Elie Wiesel, the Museum’s founding chairman, was deported to Auschwitz with his family in May 1944. He was selected for forced labor and survived. He later said, “I thought in 1945 antisemitism died in Auschwitz, but I was wrong. Its victims perished, antisemitism did not.”

We are witness to the revolting truth of Wiesel's observation today around the world and here in the U.S., with the tiki torch marches, the casual displays of Nazi salutes, the killing of Jewish Americans in their synagogues.  That's why it's more important than ever to remember what happens when evil is allowed to fester, and to not be indifferent to its manifestations.  As Wiesel said many times in many forms,

The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Indifference creates evil. Hatred is evil itself. Indifference is what allows evil to be strong, what gives it power.

Never again.

What's That Musk-y Smell? Advertisers Fleeing "X"

After crashing car and hate speech mogul Elon Musk posted his infamous reply to a neo-Nazi post on X on Wednesday, advertisers on his social media platform are pausing their advertising so as not to be associated with vile pro-Nazi content. CNN reports that after IBM pulled its ads on Thursday, the floodgate appears to be opening:

"A torrent of prominent brands halted their advertising on X on Friday, dealing a massive reputational blow to Elon Musk’s social media company after his public embrace this week of an antisemitic conspiracy theory favored by White supremacists.

The high-profile advertiser revolt includes some of the world’s largest media companies, such as Disney, Paramount, NBCUniversal, Comcast, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent of CNN.

X also reportedly lost Apple, according to multiple news outlets including Axios, which first reported Apple’s withdrawal."

Musk's social media platform has lost significant revenue from advertisers objecting to his permissive policy on disinformation and hate speech, particularly on the far right. The White House strongly condemned Musk's latest descent into anti-Semitism, calling it "abhorrent." Also, Musk has been in a feud with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) after it pointed out numerous posts on X that were anti-Semitic, causing some advertisers to pull their ads earlier this year. Musk has gone so far as to accuse the ADL of spreading an "anti-white" message, and to threaten it with a lawsuit.

Advertising has dropped dramatically since Musk purchased the platform, some 55% year-over-year each month. When advertisers see a losing proposition being abandoned by their peers, they're not far behind them. Expect the advertising on "X" to continue to drop off dramatically.

Youngkin's Anti-Semitic Bullhorn

At a campaign appearance in Northern Virginia this week, the slippery Trumpist candidate for Virginia's governor, Glenn Youngkin, invoked Jewish philanthropist George Soros' name in a speech about right-wing attacks on local school boards. According to the Washington Post:

"GOP gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin is facing allegations of antisemitism after accusing allies of Jewish philanthropist George Soros of a shadowy campaign to place secret political operatives onto Virginia school board. [snip]
....Youngkin tried to link Soros, his Democratic opponent Terry McAuliffe, and cultural debates roiling some suburban Northern Virginia public school systems. In particular, some parents are protesting equity initiatives they associate with critical race theory, an academic framework that examines how systemic racism is ingrained in the country’s history.

'The present chaos in our schools lays squarely at the feet of 40-year politician Terry McAuliffe. It just does,' Youngkin said at an appearance Tuesday night. 'But also at George Soros-backed allies, these allies that are in the left, liberal progressive movement. They’ve inserted political operatives into our school system disguised as school boards.'” (our emphasis)

The mention of George Soros is a perennial anti-Semitic trope for extreme right wingers, who want to evoke the image of powerful Jews manipulating politics with their wealth. In a bigoted twofer, Youngkin had brought up the "critical race theory" canard which is not being taught in Virginia, but is a popular racist straw man to rile up the base who are angrily descending on school boards nationwide.

Shape-shifting Youngkin's ads depict him as a moderate suburban dad, a far cry from his radical anti-womens' choice, anti-gun safety and anti-mask and vaccine mandates positions. He was caught on hidden camera earlier this year telling someone he thought was a supporter that he needed to stay away from the choice issue in order to gain independent votes, but saying once he's elected he won't go "squishy" on banning abortion.

The Virginia gubernatorial race is being closely watched by both parties as a bellwether for 2022 and 2024. It's imperative that Dem candidate McAulliffe overcome Youngkin's attempt to turn Virginia into a petri dish for Trumpist policies.

Tweets Of The Day -- The Dark Siders

Trolls and Dark Siders also inhabit Canada, and they hate the same people as those Dark Siders (i.e., Trump's base) on this side of the border:

Monday Reading

As always, please go to the links for the full articles/ op eds.

The cabinet of loser Donald "Not Exonerated" Trump has been notable mostly for its incompetence and corruption, following the example of the Extremely Stable Genius (check out David Graham's refresher on the stinkers).  Now another name has been added to the hall of shame, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao -- not coincidentally the wife of vile turtle/ troll hybrid Sen. Mitch "Missy" McConnell (R-Swamp):
Ms. Chao’s office had made a series of unorthodox requests related to her first scheduled visit to China as a Trump cabinet member, according to people with knowledge of the email. Among them: asking federal officials to help coordinate travel arrangements for at least one family member and include relatives in meetings with government officials.
In China, the Chaos are no ordinary family. They run an American shipping company with deep ties to the economic and political elite in China, where most of the company’s business is centered. The trip was abruptly canceled by Ms. Chao after the ethics question was referred to officials in the State and Transportation Departments and, separately, after The New York Times and others made inquiries about her itinerary and companions.
“She had these relatives who were fairly wealthy and connected to the shipping industry,” said a State Department official who was involved in deliberations over the visit. “Their business interests were potentially affected by meetings.”
Although the trip in 2017 was cancelled due to those ethics concerns, Chao has long been active working to benefit her family's company in China and influence American policies toward China. The article goes on to detail the swampy nature of the Chao- McConnell- China connection.  The common denominator for them is the same as it is for all Republicans:  the point of government service is to fatten my wallet, suckers!

Speaking of incompetence and corruption, Trump has now arrived in London for a state visit prior to the commemoration of the D-Day landings 75 years ago.  Before landing, he lashed out at the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on Twitter:

The mayor's office had the proper response:
Khan’s spokesman responded by saying “childish insults” should be “beneath the president of the United States.”
They added: “Sadiq is representing the progressive values of London and our country, warning that Donald Trump is the most egregious example of a growing far-right threat around the globe, which is putting at risk the basic values that have defined our liberal democracies for more than 70 years.”
On Sunday, Khan stoked the ire of the president by describing him as “just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat” and compared the language he has used to that of the “fascists of the 20th century.”
Meanwhile, the stupid twit is complaining because he can't get his morning Fox & Friends fix.

America, devolving one decade at a time.

As Mayor Khan noted, the far- right threat of which "Trump is the most egregious example" is growing globally, perhaps most disturbingly in Germany given its shameful history:
The German government's anti-Semitism commissioner on Saturday warned the country's Jewish community to avoid donning yarmulkes, the traditional Jewish head coverings for males, in some public spaces due to a rise in anti-Semitic crimes.
"I cannot advise Jews to wear the kippah everywhere all the time in Germany," Felix Klein said in an interview carried by the Funke media group, using another word for yarmulke.
The official said he had "changed his mind (on the subject) compared to previously."
The number of attacks against Jews in Germany increased from 1,504 in 2017 to 1,646 in 2018 — a rise of 10%. The number of reported violent cases against Jews rose from 37 to 62 over the same period, according to official figures.
Justice Minister Katarina Barley told the Handelsblatt newspaper the increase was "shameful for our country" but added that the police were "vigilant."
This stomach- churning news should not received by smug Americans as validation of their moral superiority.  The Anti- Defamation League reports that in 2018 there were 1,879 recorded attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions in the US, the third highest year on record since the 1970s, including the murderous assaults on the Chabad synagogue in California and the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.

The link for the report on the German warning came from Infidel 753's link round- up, which we consider an essential read every week.

Another Day, Another Hate Crime

Yesterday, it was in Poway, California:
A 19-year-old man armed with an assault rifle walked into a suburban San Diego synagogue Saturday morning and opened fire, killing one person and injuring three others, including a child, in a mass shooting that the mayor cast as a “hate crime.”
The San Diego Sheriff's Office said that John Earnest of San Diego had been arrested in connection with the shooting at the Chabad of Poway but they didn't believe there were any other suspects. Police said he has had no prior contact with police and was being questioned by local detectives and local FBI agents Saturday afternoon.
What do we know about the shooter?  Take a guess!
Sheriff William Gore said authorities were looking into a rambling, multi-page manifesto that was published minutes before the shooting by a person with the same name, in which the writer claimed Jews were destroying whites and praised attacks in Pittsburgh and New Zealand. [snip]
Authorities were also “looking into the possibility” of Earnest's involvement in a mosque fire in nearby Escondido last month, a claim that is made in the manifesto, Gore said.
The shooting came 6 months to the day from the horrific murder of 11 congregants at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA.

Now, for the chasers from the white nationalists' commander- in- chief:

This follows the Trump regime's decision to disband the domestic terrorism intelligence group in the Department of Homeland Security, including reassigning its last two experts on white nationalist terrorism.  That's no unfortunate coincidence, folks.

BONUSTo say these thugs have been emboldened would be an understatement.

The Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre

Symptoms and causes:
... [A]nti-Semitic activity, including hate crimes in schools and bomb threats against Jewish institutions, has been soaring — up an unprecedented 57 percent last year, according to the Anti-Defamation League. That is the symptom. The cause is a climate in which the sentiments of white nationalists and other hate groups are no longer suppressed.
Hate groups feel emboldened to show their faces in public, as they did when they marched last year in Charlottesville, chanting: “Jews will not replace us.” That, too, had a deadly result. But the president of the United States insisted there had been moral equivalency between the neo-Nazis and those who had shown up to protest them: “There are two sides to a story. I thought what took place was a horrible moment for the country, but there are two sides to a story.”

Given that, what cure is offered by the Very Stable Genius?

There's little question our political climate has devolved by perhaps 150 years -- particularly accelerating since this vile toad and his cretinous fans have infected the body politic.  However, that process has been underway for the past 50 years through the Republican Party as it catered more and more to the vicious smallness and grievances of a core white nationalist base, until it has become their vehicle of expression.

The process of taking our country back begins on November 6, but cannot end there.  Violent right- wingers (call them white nationalists, alt- right or neo- Nazis too) have been playing a long game, waiting under their rocks to emerge, as Tumulty says above, once emboldened by the vile toad. The protection we need from these creatures does not involve having guns in synagogues, churches, mosques, schools or movie theaters. It involves having a political system that continually neuters and buries such creatures and their malignancy.  Going forward, it must be our life's work.

BONUS:  In a Tweet (deleted after the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre), House Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Reptile-CA) wanted us to know there are three wealthy Jewish Americans trying to buy the election for Democrats --

As we often say, the sickening rot runs all the way through the Republican Party. Vote. Them. Out.

Alt-Right Loon Kills At Least 8 At Pittsburgh Synagogue (UPDATED)

A gunman, identified as Robert Bowers, 46, walked into the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, this morning shouting "All Jews must die!" then shot and killed at least 8 congregants:
Congregants near the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh were ambushed on Saturday morning by a man who opened fire with multiple weapons. According to on-scene reports, the shooter shouted “All Jews must die” as he was firing into those present.
At 11:30 ET, news reports indicate that 8 people have died, and 12 are wounded including at least 3 police officers who responded to the shooting. First reports of the shooting came in around 10:45 ET, while the web site for the Tree of Life shows that Shabbat services began at 9:45, suggesting that the gunman may have assaulted the congregation as the service was ending. Reports indicate that four people were killed on the main floor of the synagogue. The shooter then killed more people in the basement of the synagogue. One person may have been killed outside the building.
He's a far- right,  anti- Semitic, anti- refugee crackpot:

Re HIAS --
HIAS (founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) is an American nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees.

More to come.

UPDATEHe's a white nationalist QAnon nut, of course.

UPDATE II:  The death toll is now 11.

Quote Of The Day: Trump Plays To His Stormtrumpers

“This is a guy who understands that the center of his play is this deeply resentful, edge case group of people who really believe that the Jews control the world, and that white nationalism is the future of American politics... And they range in sophistication from, you know, the guys who are fairly clever race-baiters who try to stay out of the dirtier slums to the crazies in mom’s basement screaming for hot pockets and a new Holocaust.”   Republican strategist Rick Wilson yesterday on neo- fascist white supremacist re-tweeter Donald "Rump" Trump, of anti- Semitic slur shame. (Meanwhile, just saw a loonng piece on Secretary Clinton's e-mail "lies" by Mrs. Alan Greenspan on local NBC affiliate news. Fallout! Sic transit gloria, America.)

Anti-Semitic Dog Whistler Trump Says What (UPDATED)

What:

Hmmm.  Star of David imposed over a pile of money...

[Tweetstorm]

Get out the bleach:

Don't worry, Rump.  Message received!

UPDATE:  Just in case anyone thinks reaction to this is overwrought, here's who created this meme.

UPDATE II:  The Anti-Defamation League has responded:
“We’ve been alarmed that Mr. Trump hasn’t spoken out vociferously against these anti-Semites and racists and misogynists who continue to support him,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League. “It’s been outrageous to see him retweeting and now sourcing material from the website and other online resources from this crowd.” [snip]
“I’d like to see Donald Trump reject these people with clarity and precision, the same way he rejected the other Republican candidates and the way that he has rejected folks on the Democratic side,” Greenblatt said Sunday. “On the day after the passing of Elie Wiesel, arguably one of the most important moral figures of the 20th century, there is a chance for him to speak with similar clarity about what is in bounds and out of bounds. And the time is now.”
And,
"We are outraged to see that his campaign is sourcing material like this offensive image form white supremacist websites and online sources," said Todd Gutnick, communications director with the Anti-Defamation League.
"It is long overdue for Mr. Trump to reject the anti-Semites and racists," Gutnick said in a statement to NBC News.

Three Little Pigs

-- Sen. Joe "My Other Mansion Is A" Manchin (DINO-WV), a.k.a. Cornpone Joe Lieberman, is reading Rethuglican talking points... again.

-- Space invader and former Rep. Allen West (R-Uranus) will no longer be employed by right-wing wurlitzer Pajamas Media because he just might be anti-Semitic (but not because he's a raving loon, oh no!).

-- The State Representative referenced by President Obama in the clip below -- the one who likened the Affordable Care Act to the Fugitive Slave Act -- is State Rep. Bill O'Brien, former New Hampshire House speaker and current Ign'ant Analogy Champeen.

Department of Terminal Delusion

"Them Jews aren't going to let him talk to me." -- "Rev." Jeremiah "Wrong" Wright, in an interview explaining why President Obama hasn't contacted him. This was on the same day as the shooting at Washington, DC's Holocaust Memorial, and shows that anti-Semitism isn't confined to white supremacists.

It's a sign of his delusional state that Wrong thinks that Obama would just love to talk to the guy whose inflammatory rhetoric was used to try to link his views to Obama, which almost sank his candidacy.

Them Meskins Kids Is. . . Um. . . .Anti-Semitic!

That's the ticket! The Washington Monthly captures the anti-immigrant wingnuttery here. Don't let Latinos in to the U.S. because they might be more anti-Semitic than other Catholic immigrants. Does everyone need to pledge their allegiance to the right-wing Likud faction in Israel to be considered worthy of U.S. citizenship?

Also, Charles "Dr. Strangelove" Krauthammer thinks that the U.S. needs to provide a "nuclear umbrella" for Israel vs. Iran, despite the fact that Israel has some 200 nuclear warheads at its disposal, and seems to be a hell of a lot better at using their military resources than we are. And it's soooo likely that the Iranians would use nuclear weapons to annihilate, oh say, Jerusalem - - the third most holy site in Islam. Joe Klein, writing in Time's Swampland blog, has a sharp rebuttal. Israel is respected and feared in the region because they don't broadcast what they would do in every situation, unlike blowhards like Kraphammer.

UPDATE: Kraphammer's statement that Israel has to rely only on a land-based deterrent falls apart when one realizes that Israel has submarine launched cruise missiles that carry nuclear warheads.
