Birtherism Comes Home To Roost
Until now, the issue of Rethug extremist Sen. "Tailgunner Ted" Cruz's eligibility for the Presidency centered on the "natural born citizen" phrase in the Constitution, since Tailgunner Ted was born in Calgary, Canada to an American mother. The Constitutional's term "natural born" has never been defined by the courts, but Constitutional scholars are in general agreement that children born to a U.S. citizen abroad are "natural born." (True birthers would never accept this interpretation, since it would mean accepting the reality of Hawaiian- born President Obama's citizenship and presidential eligibility, regardless of where he was born).
In a lame attempt to defuse the issue, Tailgunner Ted released his mother's birth certificate yesterday, indicating that she was born in Delaware in 1934. However, there are new reports that the Tailgunner's mother was on Canadian voter registration lists in the 1970s (he was born in 1970), which indicates that she likely became a Canadian citizen at some point, thus renouncing her U.S. citizenship. The timing is critical: if she was a naturalized Canadian citizen at the time of Tailgunner Ted's birth, the radical Texas Senator's "natural born" status is blown, and he can go back to his Senate career of attempting to shut down the Government. With any luck, the Rethugs will have nominated Tailgunner Ted and spent hundreds of millions on his election before a judicial determination of his ineligibility to be President is made. Schadenfreude, let's indulge in it.
