In a stunning security breach inside the Green Zone today, a bomb exploded in the cafeteria of Iraq's parliament building, killing two legislators and wounding four others. One of those killed was Mohammed Awad, a member of the Sunni National Dialogue Front. The bomb went off as legislators entered the cafeteria for lunch. Also Thursday, a bomb collapsed the historic al-Sarafiya bridge in Baghdad, killing at least 10 and wounding 26. Patrol boats are searching for survivors in the Tigris River, believing that at least 20 people were in cars that plummeted into the river when the bridge collapsed.
Meanwhile, Bush enabler and BFF Sen. Johnnie Walnuts (Deadender-AZ) told an audience at the Virginia Military Institute yesterday that the war was "necessary and just," and demanded that the surge be allowed to succeed. In response, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) called for a "surge in honesty," challenging Walnuts' claims of improving security and saying Walnuts was measuring progress using "the same ideological fantasies" that led America into war.
UPDATE: The parliament death toll has now risen to eight, including 3 legislators (2:30 p.m. edt).
