King of the Wild Frontier

For guys of a certain age, the story of Davy Crockett came alive during the mid-1950s when Walt Disney presented a three-part series on TV, starring Fess Parker as Davy Crockett (and Buddy Ebsen as his sidekick). The show set off a tremendous wave of interest and triggered a marketing frenzy for coonskin caps, buckskin shirts, etc. Fess Parker died yesterday at age 85. He had become a real estate tycoon and wine maker near Santa Barbara after his acting career faded in the 1970s, but will always be remembered from his role as Davy Crockett -- which he gladly and graciously embraced. RIP.
