Coming only hours after the latest massacre by Syrian President Assad's forces, Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution backing the Arab League's plan to transition to democracy (i.e., remove Assad and his supporters from power). The other 13 members of the Council voted in favor of the resolution. This vote starkly demonstrates the distance Russia and China need to go before they approach being responsible actors on the world stage. One can only hope the March elections in Russia are the beginning of the end of Putinism. For China, we're at least a generation away at best, I'm afraid.
