A Start

Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said today that she would introduce legislation on the first day the Senate convenes to ban assault weapons. She indicated an identical bill would be introduced in the House. The bill would also deal with high capacity clips and magazines, and would deal with the importation, sale and possession of assault weapons. The original assault weapons ban that was enacted in 1994 expired in 2004.

Good for Sen. Feinstein, but we need legislators who will step forward to support the legislation. We need a continuing, well-funded campaign -- tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars -- that can counter the campaign of lies and paranoia spread by the leadership of the NRA that's sure to come. It would be wonderful if sympathetic billionaires like Mayor Michael Bloomberg and wealthy supporters of President Obama could help fund such an effort, because the NRA will be out in force now twisting the truth and threatening politicians with defeat over this reasonable legislation.

UPDATE: Here's the link to make contributions to the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence.

Amen, P.E.C.. Apparently, gun control advocacy groups had a large increase in contributions in the aftermath of the killings. It has to be a long-term, well financed effort to counterbalance the NRA and other conservative groups.
