Letters We Wish We'd Written Dept.

From this morning's once great Washington Post  Bezos Bugle:
The Post’s characterization of Mitt Romney’s 47 percent remark is a great example of how toothless and boring political reporting has become [“Gansler said rival relies on his race in Md. contest,” front page, Aug. 13].
The Post said, “In the 2012 presidential race, GOP nominee Mitt Romney had to defend his ‘47 percent’ comments, which critics said disparaged nearly half the electorate.”
No, “critics” didn’t say that. Romney flatly disparaged nearly half the electorate. The Post’s phrasing suggested that there is an alternative construal. Did Romney launch a counteroffensive saying he was actually praising the 47 percent? No. He apologized for the remarks. The Post reported it.
This is a great example validating Paul Krugman’s quip that if someone said the Earth is flat, the media would headline the story “Views differ on shape of planet.
