Yes, the Rethug politicians are legally blind when it comes to figuring out how to keep the nutzoid teabaggers from getting nominated and losing winnable elections. As the linked item notes, it's not the nominating process so much as the rabid right-wing base itself, which will turn out in caucuses, conventions, and primary elections regardless.
It might be a better strategy for the Rethug establishment to encourage alternative conservative programming on hate radio, where irrational hatred of everything Obama reigns, and encourage the numerous wealthy, shadow backers of teabagger front groups to get a grip on reality and to stop lying about everything this Administration (and Dem Administrations going back to Franklin Roosevelt) have done. Maybe then the mythical "fever" will be broken, but it won't be broken by changing conventions to primaries, because the same loons will always crash the party.
