NC Rethug Compares Lincoln To Hitler...Seriously (UPDATED)

When the segregationist Dixiecrats switched uniforms in the '60s and '70s and signed on to Richard Nixon's Rethuglican "Southern Strategy," it was only a matter of time that the party's onetime symbol, Abraham Lincoln, would come under attack from within. Take for example North Carolina's Rethuglican State representative Larry "The Pits" Pittman. In responding to a comment on his Facebook page that he should "get over" the Supreme Court decision legalizing same sex marriage, The Pits had the following to say about the revered 16th President:

“And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort (of) tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”

This is a Rethug state legislator comparing Lincoln to Hitler. To Hitler! And if you think this is an anomaly within the Rethuglican party's base, you need to get out more. The Pits wrote what many of them in deep red areas think in private: the Confederacy was a noble cause, slavery benefitted African-Americans (or if it didn't, screw them anyway), and it's too bad the Confederacy is no more. You can be sure that he considers himself a true American "patriot" too. If this latter day secessionist has his head back in the 1860s (and up his rear end, too), that's a problem for the voters in his district, at least for those why haven't also lost their minds and souls.
