We found this succinct explanation of the history of the traitorous and racist Confederate statues to hit all of the relevant points. The goal of the groups erecting them was to "celebrate" and sanitize the odious Confederacy at times when white supremacy was being challenged: during the Jim Crow era after the turn of the century and during the Civil Rights period.
