A Resignation and Questions

Almost lost in the news of the Mueller indictments last night was the simultaneous news of the abrupt and unexpected resignation of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana Boente. Boente also serves as Acting Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division. Boente is expected to leave as soon as his designated replacement, John Demers, is confirmed and sworn in.

What makes Boente's resignation significant, as suggested by Rachel Maddow on last night's program, is that he is a likely witness to obstruction of justice by lawless demagogue Donald "Rump" Trump. When Rump met with former FBI Director James Comey to pressure him to drop the Russiagate investigation, Comey indicated in testimony before Congress that Boente was a witness to that pressure. Boente also served as Acting Attorney General after Sally Yates was fired for warning Rump about disgraced Putin plant Michael Flynn, and before Confederate Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III was sworn in. Thus, he would have been privy to contemporary memos, meetings and discussions about Comey's pursuit of the investigation with Rump and other officials.

Stay tuned to see what role, if any, Boente will play in the unfolding saga.
