During World War II, women formed the backbone and muscle for the war production effort, working in plants that produced planes, tanks and ships in staggering numbers. The campaign promoting this effort used a character, "Rosie the Riveter," to inspire and to give credit to the tremendous sacrifice and commitment that won the war on the home front. It has since become a prolific feminist, "can do" image. Naomi Parker Fraley, who was the original model for "Rosie" while working in a California factory, passed away Saturday at the age of 96.
In the Women's March this past weekend, the "Rosie the Riveter" icon was visible everywhere, for example, below, in Saturday's Sioux Falls, SD march.
The iconic image has been modified and adapted over time to send the message that, as never before, women united in a mission are an indomitable force.

I wrote, “And yet, she persisted” on a piece of sturdy cardstock and tacked it onto a bulletin board in my studio. It reminds me that the odds are not in our favor, as women continue to fight for equality and a voice to be heard. I've seen it in my own life experiences. And that makes me stronger and more willing than ever to do battle for what I believe in.
The media won't acknowledge the millions of women and men who marched this past weekend. On Sunday, the day after, there were no women's voices heard on the political talking head programs. It's rare to get a decent Democrat on any of those shows as it is. It's yet another example of weakness on the Democratic front for public awareness. They need to be an equal force against the constant drumbeat of Republican rhetoric.
I'm thrilled to see more women taking part in local and national politics. Whether it's a school board, city commission, mayor, governor, or president, we need women's voices to be recognized.
Nevertheless, we persisted!
donnah - We've said it before and we'll say it again: men largely got us into this mess, and it will be women who will get us out!
