Somehow, we knew the nativist Republican Senate led by the sleazy partisan Mitch "Missy" McConnell wouldn't let a bill pass that would address the fate of Dreamers and immigration in a humane way:
Amendment based on Pres Trump's immig framework FAILS in the Senate (each need 60):— Frank Thorp V (@frankthorp) February 15, 2018
1- (FAILS 52-47) McCain-Coons (Just #DACA + Border)
2- (FAILS 54-45) Toomey (penalized sanctuary cities)
3- (FAILS 54-45) Rounds-King (bipartisan bill)
4-(FAILS 39-60) Grassley (Trump's framework)
The white- supremacist- in- chief lobbied furiously against the Rounds-King bipartisan bill, which would have "legalized" 1.8 million immigrants including Dreamers, provided funding for border security over the next 10 years, tightened up family- based immigration programs (but to a lesser extent than the White (Supremacist) House wanted), and maintained the status quo on the diversity visa lottery program. It was far from perfect, but it had garnered the most votes (54) and represented the best chance for moving forward.
As Brian Beutler put it even before the bills were voted on:
The Republican Party wants to deport Dreamers.
That’s the reason Congress has never passed legislation to protect Dreamers; why a Republican president, Donald Trump, terminated an administrative policy, DACA, that allowed Dreamers to live and work in the U.S. legally; why Congress is failing before our eyes to codify a version of the program Trump killed before Dreamers start getting swept into deportation proceedings in big numbers. And it is why Trump is threatening to veto the latest bipartisan proposal to protect Dreamers.Once again, above all else, this villainy and the Florida tragedy has proven beyond any doubt that we need to vote as many of these Republican shitheels out of office as we can.
Every news item that I'm reading lately that tells about family members being deported and sent to countries to which they have no current connection makes me weep. One anguished man was sent back to Mexico and hasn't been able to sleep because he's terrified and anxious about his new reality. Other stories tell of mothers with children being sent away, mothers with critically ill family members who are ripped away from the only homes they know. How do they deserve to be sent away? They're good people with flawless records. They work and pay taxes.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans are f*cking monsters. There's no other way to describe them. They are racist, misogynist, hate-filled monsters.
donnah - Remember when Rump said they would be going after the "bad hombres"? What people didn't get was that in his mind, that meant anyone ICE could get their hands on. Turning the keys of the Federal Government over to a bunch of racists was bound to lead to this. The good news is these monsters can be slain -- at the ballot box.
