A Nation's Pride, A Nation's Shame
Today, all 12 boys and their Thai soccer team coach were rescued from the cave they've been trapped in for 18 days. The skill and heroics of the rescue team -- Thai Navy SEAL members, cave diving experts from all over the world, some U.S. military specialists, and many others -- cannot be overstated. It was a very dangerous and physically demanding operation with parts of the cave flooded, and they succeeded. Now, the parents of the boys can welcome them home.
There won't be a welcome home or even a reunion for dozens of migrant children who were separated by force from their parents on the southern border as a result of demagogue Donald "Rump" Trump's policy. A Federal judge set tomorrow as the deadline for reuniting children under the age of 5, and only 54 out of 102 have been reunited. The judge has now extended the deadline, after rejecting Rump's request for long-term detention. There are still over 2,300 children in detention camps across the country, many in cages, with the Rump Administration incapable of assuring that each child and parent can be identified and linked up.
Two nations, one bursting with pride, the other covered in shame.

Yes, we saw the worst and the best of people in the Thailand rescue. Brave divers also sacrificed their lives and for that we must remember that there are always tradeoffs.
ReplyDeleteBut it's a very good point to remind everyone that just because something grabs headlines these days, it isn't the only news. And just because a story is ongoing and unresolved, it doesn't end with the lack of coverage.
It's honestly almost impossible to keep up with the amount of terrible news we're getting every single day now. But we cannot let the immigrant story drop off the front page. These are children who were stolen from their families, expressly to punish their parents from seeking asylum. They were never meant to be reunited. There was never a plan to do that because the children were meant to be sent all over the country and fostered and adopted. The parents were supposed to go back home and warn others that they were not welcome in the US and they would lose their children, too.
The rate of them being reunited won't increase much. Trump and his minions will stall and drag their heels and hope that other egregious acts they commit will take over the headlines. They know they won't have to answer for what they've done. Hell, Mitch McConnell will just say it's over and it will be over.
But we won't let that happen, we cannot let it happen. We have to save those children and their parents.
The difference between Thailand & the US, now. One is humane, caring & with heart. The other, soulless, morally bankrupt, devoid of humanity. Gee, which is which??
ReplyDeleteI hope the press/media keeps this (Thai rescue) on the front pages along with the US kidnapped immigrant children along side. And please keep using the name, Trump Assministration with reference to the Latter. PICTURES, please!!!!
