Another Scare With RBG

Every time the great Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, now 85,  has a health issue, we hope with every fiber that she completely recovers. She's tough, with the stamina that most 30-somethings would envy.

She's the mainstay of the progressive wing of the Supreme Court.

When she fell last month and broke some ribs, the doctors examining her found malignant nodules on her lungs. She underwent surgery earlier today to remove the nodules, and from preliminary indications the surgery was successful. What's worrisome is that is her third bout with cancer, first for colon cancer and later for pancreatic cancer. With sociopathic demagogue and unhinged neo-fascist Donald "Rump" Trump running amok each day, should something else happen to Justice Ginsberg that would force her to retire from the bench, Rump would get a third nominee to the highest court, an unthinkable disaster. A supine Rethuglican Senate would almost certainly rubber stamp Rump's pick.

Hindsight is 20/20, but now that we're in the unexpected upside down world of Trumpism, how different things would have looked if Judge Merrick Garland had been allowed to serve on the bench, or if Justice Ginsberg had retired early in President Obama's second term, allowing him to name a replacement.

Regardless of the Court, as a great human being and patriot, we hope that she hangs on for a long time to come.
