The Right's Obsession With A Civil War

Chris Hayes covers the curious, but extremely dangerous, obsession of the Trumpist right (many safely ensconced in studios) with a second civil war (via Media Matters):

They seem all too serious, so it would behoove us to take their threats seriously and not be blindsided if these anti- democratic, anti- American right- wing authoritarians put their fantasies into action.

I am concerned. You have to be. But always remember what cowards they really are. That's why they have such a pathological need for their guns. Spasms of violence against marginal individuals or communities is likely. Widespread insurrection is not. Our biggest concern if violence began to escalate and spread is that the police are largely sympathetic to white nationalism and eliminating liberals.

Lawrence -- excellent points. Bottom line: be watchful and be prepared for signs of an unraveling.

I've been seeing "second civil war" rhetoric from rank-and-file wingnuts going back well into the Obama administration. But I find it laughable. Most of these people are a few ants short of a picnic. The last time some of them made an actual attempt at an insurrection, they seized a bird sanctuary visitor kiosk in eastern Oregon, forgot their socks, and ended up begging people over the internet to send them Cheetos.

I'm sure there will be individual spasms of violence here and there, like the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting or the pipe bomb mailings last October, but really that level of thing has been going on ever since the real Civil War, courtesy of the KKK and suchlike groups. What made the real Civil War possible was that several whole states revolted, so there was a ready-made organizational structure in place (state governments) to launch a war against the central government. I doubt these bozos we've got today are capable of organizing anything more impressive than the bird sanctuary thing.
