Columbine, 20 Years On

The shooting massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO occurred 20 years ago today. Twelve students and one teacher were killed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold who were wielding sawed off shotguns, a carbine rifle, and semiautomatic handgun. In memory of the victims, hundreds of people gathered at the Columbine memorial for a candlelight vigil yesterday.

Vox has an article on six survivors of the Columbine massacre reflecting on their experience, how their lives have changed, and on continued school shootings that have taken lives from Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook to Parkland. Imagine the families and friends of all these shooting victims over the years carrying such a burden for the rest of their lives. And yet, so little has been done to minimize the threat of gun violence since. Shameful.

I'm sure everyone's saying this, but twenty years? It seems incredible to me that so much time has passed. And it's incredible that our progress forward to keep it from happening over and over again is still where it was then. Mass shootings still happen. Haters still get guns. Media outlets call for thoughts ans prayers.

But I do sense a weakening in the grip of the NRA, npi. I hope we can break them via their finances.

We can never forget and we can never lose hope that someday our children won't see these events.
