The Abbey Road Crossing At 50

The iconic photo of the Beatles for their "Abbey Road" album was taken 50 years ago today by photographer Ian Macmillan. Thousands of fans showed up today to recreate the moment for themselves.

A total of six shots were taken of them as they walked back and forth. The fifth picture was finally selected for the cover of their 11th album.

The cover photo spawned numerous bizarre theories, centered around the rumor that Paul McCartney was dead, and based on their clothing and place in line. For example, John represented a minister in white, Ringo the undertaker, Paul the deceased and George the grave digger. Ah, such are the conspiracies hatched in thousands of smoky dorm rooms and teenage slumber parties.

I was a big fan of the album in college but I don't remember that particular theory. The White Album had "Revolution 9", which supposedly played backwards was Paul is dead. This was popular when passing the weed. Good times.
