The Rethugs are defending demagogue and con man Donald "Rump" Trump with a new tale: on a September phone call with ambassador Gordon Sondland, after Sondland asked Trump "what do you want from Ukraine," Trump responded "Nothing. No quid pro quo." The Rethugs seized on that reported statement.
However, as Rep. Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) emphasized, the call with Trump was on September 9, not long after the whistleblower claimed a quid pro quo with Ukraine and the day that Congress launched an investigation into the Ukraine shakedown. Trump was prepared to give that answer, knowing that if the investigation proceeded, Sondland could quote him.

Melania - "Donald, who is this naked woman in our bed?"
Trump - "What naked woman?"
Melania - "Sorry, my bad."
This is sort of like Nixon's claim that, sure, the White House tapes showed him discussing the commission of all sorts of crimes with his henchpersons, but in that lost 18 minutes that had been tragically erased, he said, "But it would be wrong!", and instructed his henchpeople to not do any of the crimes they had discussed purely as hypotheticals.
Glen -- they seem to all be using the "Alibis for Republican Criminals" handbook.
