QOTD: Call To Arms

"I very reluctantly compare Trump’s continued dalliance with Putin to an imagined scenario after 9/11 in which then-President George W. Bush would have somehow forgiven Osama bin Laden for the deaths of more than 3,000 Americans on 9/11. That scenario is frankly impossible to comprehend knowing President Bush’s zeal to punish and destroy al- Qaeda, but it is in fact quite similar to what Trump has done with Putin. One may recall a May 2017 Oval Office meeting in which according to press accounts and the Mueller Report, Trump mocked former FBI Director James Comey and the Russia investigation in his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and former Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak. To say this was inappropriate is an understatement. This was just the first of several high-level engagements, some with Putin himself, in which Trump’s coziness with the Russian leadership was on full display." -- retired CIA officer Marc Polymeropolous, writing at Just Security.org about the national security danger represented by Trump's affinity for Putin and Russia, and his rejection of intelligence that's critical of Russia. The whole piece is well worth a read, and lays out how the monster in the Oval Office is actively doing Moscow's work.

Back in the 80's, I read a second-rate sci-fi, techo-thriller that had the US president an agent of the Soviet Union. That fictional president had been compromised while a congressman and as politicians do, continued working his way up to POTUS.

As president, that character was doing everything to wreck the country domestically and internationally while the Soviet Union secretly ran a disinformation and propaganda campaign to further destabilize the country.

Change that character from a politician to real estate developer/reality TV personality and it's damn eerie how much that author got right.

Oh, one more item about that book. The book had an open right-wing bent which probably reflected the author's views. The author had the traitor president a Democrat. I've forgotten the title of the book and the name of the author, but I've often wondered what he thinks of trump.

Beach Bum -- That's a great story and very prescient, save for the political affiliation. Once the facts about the leverage that Russia exercises over Trump comes out, we'll understand his bizarre and treasonous actions better.
