Last night's season opener between the Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees was an inauspicious occasion:
- Nationals star outfielder Juan Soto tested positive for COVID-19 before the game;
- Nationals fan and American hero Dr. Anthony Fauci tossed the opening pitch, which went juuust a bit outside, and
- The game was halted after a line of torrential rain and thunderstorms passed over.
There are 59 games left in the truncated MLB season, so it's way too early to think that demagogue and covidiot Donald "Very Stable Genius" Trump has a "curse" effect on the team (but we will anyway). You may have seen the White House ceremony for the Nationals last fall, when Trump awkwardly groped MAGA hat-wearing catcher Kurt Suzuki's manboobs, as first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and manager Dave Martinez took turns praising Trump. This was on November 4, just days after the House of Representatives authorized Trump's impeachment inquiry. So unless the Nats' ears and eyes had been covered with pine tar, they knew about the serious, treasonous allegations against Dear Leader but MAGAed anyway (to their credit, some players like Sean Doolittle and now- gone Anthony Rendon absented themselves). There's little chance of the Nationals repeating a World Series title, so curse or not, we likely won't see a repeat of the Nationals' clown show this fall.
