Yet another Trump political gambit that blew up in his face?
After my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland. They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland.

Our local Oregon State Police officers will be downtown to protect Oregonians' right to free speech and keep the peace. Let's center the Black Lives Matter movement's demands for racial justice and police accountability. It's time for bold action to reform police practices.

This is great news. We'll see now, if that translates into him backing off on other cities - or perhaps he's marshalling the forces for an incursion into Chicago, with others to follow.
ReplyDeleteThe mere fact that these are considerations fills me with despair. Yes, I know that's the point, which makes it all the worse. I'd ask myself how we got to this place, but the road was clear - from Reagan to Trump was a superhighway unobstructed by political obstacles.
I suspect our governor just guaranteed her re-election -- not that there was ever much doubt.
ReplyDeleteCzippy -- let's hope this was a lesson learned and that such tactics won't be used again. They must have seen polling that showed this was another Lafayette Square disaster but on a larger scale. (but we remain skeptical).
