There's considerable finger-pointing among law enforcement officials -- and Federal and local officials -- in the wake of the disastrous and deadly coup attempt at the Capitol last Wednesday by the cult of fascist demagogue and unhinged loser Donald "Mango Mussolini" Trump. What was obvious to anyone with access to a newspaper or the Internet was that mobs of angry, violent Trump cultists were coming to the nation's capitol to stop the certification of the electoral votes that have given President-elect Joe Biden the White House. Trump himself had been urging his cult to come to DC on January 6, promising it "will be wild."
With the stipulation that there's a lot of CYA going on, the reporting by NBC News suggests that the FBI and NYPD told the Capitol Police that they were seeing strong indications of potential violence that day.
"It was immediately obvious after the Capitol was seized by a violent mob Wednesday that Capitol Police, whose job is to defend the facility and the lawmakers who work there, had completely misjudged the security threat. The chief of the force was quickly forced out of his job, as were other key legislative security officials."
The bottom line is the Capitol Police are ultimately responsible for protecting the Capitol and the elected officials and staff who work there. That's why the Capitol Police Chief was sacked shortly after, with the prospect of more heads to roll. So we were somewhat surprised to read that after the intelligence failure leading to the Capitol being overrun by insurrectionists, the Capitol Police named an Acting Chief...who was their Assistant Chief for Protective and Intelligence Operations, rather than someone from the outside on a temporary basis. Clearly, the Capitol Police have been traumatized by the riot, losing two of their officers and having others beaten by the rioting traitors, so perhaps this was a move to keep the command structure as familiar as possible to the rank-and-file, but the questions continue.
