Chauvin Medical Witness' Work Being Investigated

One of the odder witnesses for convicted murderer Derek Chauvin was former Maryland Chief Medical Examiner David Fowler, whose tortured testimony attempted to exonerate Chauvin by claiming the cause of death was "undetermined." Despite the testimony of multiple medical and scientific experts to the contrary, Fowler insisted that the compression of George Floyd's neck under Chauvin's knee for over 9 minutes didn't cause his death:

"Fowler testified that the primary cause of Floyd’s death was cardiac arrhythmia during police restraint due to underlying heart disease. He also said that Floyd’s drug use and exposure to carbon monoxide from the police car contributed to his death."

Because Fowler's testimony was so out of synch with credible medical opinions offered by the prosecution, the Maryland State Attorney General is launching an investigation of all autopsies of the deaths of individuals while in police custody that were supervised by Fowler:

"The attorney general’s push for a review was expedited this week after he became aware of an open letter penned by D.C.’s former chief medical examiner Roger Mitchell, which said Fowler’s testimony was “baseless' and 'revealed obvious bias.'

The letter called for state and federal investigations into Fowler’s medical license along with a review of the state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner during his 17-year tenure."

Whether or not the investigation will reveal a bias that influenced his medical opinions is uncertain, but at least in the Chauvin trial, the jury discounted Fowler's strained testimony and promptly convicted Chauvin on all counts.

Interesting. One of the faithful at work was saying he hit it out of the park and blew the prosecutions case out of the water. Guess not.

seafury -- Fowler's testimony suggested that Floyd died from everything BUT the knee on the neck.

Could be he had a heart attack or stroke or whatever. Would that have happened
without a knee on the neck for that amount of time? I'm not an MD but I doubt it.

I think this is important. One of the recurring things that you see in malfunctioning systems is when the professionals and regulators no longer police themselves, which is their obligation.

Look at the way lawyers and accountants routinely assist the wealthy and powerful with breaking the law. These are people who are granted a monopoly of sorts for their work and part of the bargain is maintaining standards for the sake of the public at large. There would have been no Trump without the crooked people who helped him along.

This Chavin Witness should be looked at hard. Pulling his license would be a great start. A lot of witness testimony is simply making up a story for a paycheck. It's not a stretch after seeing him in the trial that this guy probably made up stories at the morgue to suit his clients, the Police.

Still wondering why Giuliana, Powell, Lin have not had their licenses pulled.

He did rule Freddie Gray's death as homicide in the back of the Baltimore PD van. (Looked up expecting the opposite.) Not a total jerk? Of course all the Baltimore PD officers walked.
