Yesterday, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, causing widespread damage and hundreds of deaths. It was more powerful than the earthquake that struck the nation in 2010 that killed a staggering 220,000. The disaster is compounded by hurricane season, with tropical storm Grace heading for the besieged island. USAID is mobilizing aid to the stricken Haitians, as governments around the world are beginning to respond to the catastrophe. It's devastating enough when a developed country finds itself at the deadly whim of an earthquake. It's far worse for a desperately poor country like Haiti. The city of Les Cayes was hit especially hard by the temblor, as evidenced by these photos.
