The Republican candidate for Florida's 20th Congressional District, Jason Mariner, is the perfect exemplar for the far-right, corrupt and unhinged cult that he represents. Take a look:
"Mariner had served roughly two years total in the Palm Beach County Jail over 2007 and 2012 on charges that included felony theft, burglary, cocaine possession, obstruction and violently resisting arrest, records show. He was open during his campaign about his criminal background, telling voters, 'Before running for Congress, I ran from the law.' He also promised he will be tough on crime." (our emphasis)
Sounds like he'd fit right in with the January 6 Insurrection Party. Nice that he acknowledged what would have been made public in the course of the campaign. It's telling that he won 58% of the votes in the Republican primary on November 2.
There's a minor detail that we should also mention: as a convicted felon, he failed to go through the process for re-establishing his civil rights with the State, a step that's required to hold public office. D'oh! No word on how the district's Republicans will handle this little oversight. Since the 20th District is heavily Democratic, it's very unlikely that he'll make it past the January 11 general election even if he remains on the ballot. Nonetheless, his credentials mark him as a future star in his party.
