Jan. 6 Committee Likely To Call Trump To Testify

We noted yesterday that some are anticipating racketeering charges from the Manhattan District Attorney's office or the New York Attorney General against con man and seditionist demagogue Donald "Big Loser" Trump in connection with his Trump Organization dealings. In another one of his narcissistic "statements" from Merde o' Lardo on Saturday, Trump acknowledged an awareness of adverse legal actions against him that aren't yet public knowledge. Indeed, he filed a lawsuit against the New York Attorney General today to obstruct her pursuit of the case against him.

In another arena, a significant amount of physical evidence is also emerging from the House Committee on the January 6 insurrection that there was a coordinated and lengthy effort to disrupt the official electoral vote tally on January 6. As former Federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner writes:

"As the House select committee investigation into the Capitol riot progresses, a vivid picture is emerging. It suggests many individuals, up to and including former President Donald Trump, worked hard to obstruct that official congressional proceeding. And I believe, as do other legal experts, that doing so constitutes a federal felony.

The federal felony statute at play is straightforward: 18 U.S. Code § 1512, which provides that “whoever corruptly ... obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so, shall be ... imprisoned not more than 20 years.” There have been several ominous signs that the evidence being developed by the House select committee directly implicates this statute." (our emphasis)

Kirschner goes on to cite committee co-chair Rep. Liz Cheney's "key question" during the Mark Meadows criminal contempt vote: "Did Donald Trump, through action or inaction, corruptly seek to obstruct or impede Congress’ official proceeding to count electoral votes?" A number of Trump's seditious cult members that attacked the Capitol have already been charged with that offense. By working up through the chain-of-command, from some of the insurrection participants on the ground, to Steve "Loose Cannon" Bannon, to Mark Meadows, and perhaps some Sedition Caucus members, the committee is signaling that the malignant leader of the insurrection will be called to testify under oath and explain his role  He'll refuse, of course, as have his co-conspirators, and that sets up another criminal contempt referral to Merrick Garland's Justice Department. Buckle up.
