Yesterday into today, hundreds of cars and trucks were stranded in the snow and bitter cold overnight in both directions on I-95 in Virginia, south of Washington, DC, due to the conditions and accidents involving several tractor- trailers. We've seen similar scenes recently arising from snow storms in the west and midwest, but this is a highly unusual event for this part of the mid-Atlantic region.
As daylight turned into night, the traffic remained at a halt.
This morning, people were still stuck some 24 hours later, including one prominent person:
I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I’m still not near the Capitol. My office is in touch with @VaDOT to see how we can help other Virginians in this situation. Please stay safe everyone. pic.twitter.com/Sz1b1hZJZ5
