Yesterday's detailed, 221-page court filing by the House Committee investigating the Trumpist insurrection on January 6 had this stunning, if expected, conclusion:
“The Select Committee also has a good-faith basis for concluding that the President and members of his Campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States." (our emphasis)
It was the first time that the Committee has disclosed that they possess evidence of crimes committed by the Malignant Loser and his gang. The court filing was in response to the refusal of bizarro Trump legal advisor John Eastman to turn over documents to the Committee. Eastman prepared the blueprint for how Trump could (illegally) overturn the election by decertifying the Democratic electors in several states in the Senate's pro forma ritual on January 6 overseen by former Vice President Pence.
After receiving thousands of documents and interviewing dozens of witnesses, the Committee's filing:
".... also provides new details from the committee’s interviews with several top Trump aides and members of former Vice President Mike Pence’s team, including chief of staff Marc Short and chief counsel Greg Jacob.
The committee said it has evidence that Trump sought to obstruct an official proceeding — in this case, the certification of the election results — by trying to strong-arm Pence to delay the proceedings so there would be additional time to 'manipulate” the results.'" (our emphasis)
The Committee can't pursue criminal charges as a result of its investigation, but it will turn its evidence over to the Justice Department for prosecution. At that point, Attorney General Merrick Garland and his Federal prosecutors need to move out on indictments when the time comes, with no hesitation, qualms or timidity of the type they've displayed thus far.
