The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in eastern Ukraine is Europe's largest nuclear plant, supplying roughly one quarter of Ukraine's electricity needs, as Russia continues to engage in war against the civilian population. When a Russian rocket attack hit the facility yesterday, a fire was started in a training center. Fortunately, no radiation was released and Ukrainian fire fighters extinguished the fire.
"Ukraine’s state nuclear plant operator Enerhoatom said that three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and two wounded in the attack. [International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano] Grossi said two people were injured in the blaze that broke out.
Ukraine’s state nuclear regulator earlier said that no changes in radiation levels have been recorded so far after the plant came under attack. Grossi later said no radioactive material was released.
The attack caused worldwide concern — and evoked memories of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, at Ukraine’s Chernobyl."
Although the Russian attack may not have released radioactive material, given the general incompetence of their forces it could well have. Their objective of capturing the plant and controlling its output was achieved, although Ukrainian nuclear staff are operating the plant for now. It's further evidence of how reckless and dangerous Putin's invaders are, and will be increasingly.
