Sunday Reflection: The Bridge

“We ourselves shall be loved for awhile and forgotten. But the love will have been enough; all those impulses of love return to the love that made them. Even memory is not necessary for love. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.”  -- Playwright and author Thornton Wilder, from "The Bridge of San Luis Rey."  Winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, one for that novel and the others for the plays "Our Town", "The Skin of Our Teeth," and "The Matchmaker" (becoming the musical "Hello Dolly"), Wilder was a multilingual scholar, translator and educator, teaching courses at the University of Chicago and Harvard in the classics and poetry during his career.
