"No matter whether the Constitution follows the flag or not, the Supreme Court follows the election returns." -- Writer and humorist Finley Peter Dunne, creator of "Mr. Dooley", the fictional Irish immigrant bartender, and Dooley's perceptive, if rustically stated, aphorisms and observations ("Th' first thing to have in a libry is a shelf. Fr'm time to time this can be decorated with lithrachure. But th' shelf is th' main thing.')
In recent times, we've seen the Supreme Court do the opposite: reject the majority of the public's views on women's reproductive rights, gun safety laws, and environmental protection that have stood for decades. Next, they'll take on contraceptives, voting rights, and same-sex marriage, all supported by the public as part of their rights. They can't be voted out, but the Party they serve can and should be, at every level of government.
