Ukrainians Attack Bridge Vital To Russian Efforts

In a clear sign that Ukrainian forces are on the offensive against Russia's invaders, high precision HIMARS rocket artillery have severely damaged a bridge over the Dnieper River that was a vital supply line for the Russians in Ukraine's southern Kherson region"

"The bridge is the main crossing over the Dnieper River in the Kherson region. The only other option is a dam at the hydroelectric plant in Kakhovka, which also came under Ukrainian fire last week but has remained open for traffic.

Knocking the crossings out would make it hard for the Russian military to keep supplying its forces in the region amid repeated Ukrainian attacks. [snip]

The Ukrainian attacks on the bridge in Kherson come as the bulk of the Russian forces are stuck in the fighting in Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland of Donbas, where they have made slow gains in the face of ferocious Ukrainian resistance. Supplies of U.S. weapons such as HIMARS have helped slow the Russian advances."

Depending on the questionable ability of the Russian forces to mobilize in the Kherson region, the Ukrainian military could drive toward the land bridge between the mainland and Russian-annexed Crimea, which was invaded in 2014.

The attack comes as Ukraine's port facilities on the Black Sea are resuming operations to begin grain shipments to meet worldwide demand. Russia has said it would allow shipments from Ukraine under a supervision arrangement brokered last week by the UN and Turkey. However, Russian naval forces launched missile attacks on the port of Odesa only 24 hours after the agreement was reached, causing many to doubt Russia's agreement.
