The United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II died this afternoon (evening in the UK) at her summer estate in Balmoral, Scotland. The BBC has the initial report of her passing at age 96 after 70 years as monarch, and an obituary recounting the events of her life. Prince Charles, soon to be King Charles III, will assume the crown at age 73 (74 on November 14).
