Weekend Music

Staying on the birthday acknowledgments this week, today is the birthday of the late, legendary Otis Redding, who would have turned 81.  We remember the night of December 10, 1967, when Redding's plane crashed into a frigid Lake Monona in Madison, WI, killing him and most members of the Bar-Kays, snuffing out the life of someone destined for even greater artistic accomplishments.  His only number one song, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," was released posthumously in January 1968.

Redding's appearance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, even with a curfew- shortened set, and the subsequent D.A. Pennebaker film (released a year after his death), vaulted him to national fame.  Sadly, it turned out to be his last major concert performance.  We're featuring a live performance from Monterey, "I've Been Loving You Too Long," as well as the powerful soul ballad, 1964's "That's How Strong My Love Is."  Hope you enjoy.
