Sunday Reflection

We can have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, but we can’t have both.” ― Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, in "Brandeis on Democracy" ed. by Philippa Strum, 1995.

The right-wing Supreme Court's ruling in January 2010 in Citizens United v. FCC opened the floodgates to dark corporate and plutocrat money in political campaigns, resulting in magnified influence of the wealthy in politics. The subsequent undermining of voting rights, and the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization by a Trumpist Court majority were the logical outcome to that concentration of wealth when focused on political power. Income inequality remains a core problem, and, as Brandeis opined, a threat to democracy.
