Some 400 supporters of Brazilian fascist ex-President Jair Bolsonaro were arrested following their violent attack yesterday on government building in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. Bolsonaro was defeated for re-election by left-leaning Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after a campaign of disinformation and lies by Bolsonaro and his supporters. That and other comparisons are rife between this insurrection and the one staged two years ago almost to the day by supporters of the Malignant Loser. The above NBC News link captures the comparison in scenes with rioters using poles to bludgeon police as they broke doors and windows and vandalized the buildings housing the legislature and supreme court. Lula da Silva promised swift action against the insurrectionists, as he laid blame on Bolsonaro:
“Whoever did this will be found and punished. Democracy guarantees the right to free expression, but it also requires people to respect institutions,” Lula tweeted. “There is no precedent in the history of the country what they did today. For that they must be punished.” [snip]
"And you know that there are several speeches by the former president encouraging this," Lula said. "And this is also his responsibility and the parties that supported him."Meanwhile, Bolsonaro has been staying at a supporter's home in Orlando, FL, perhaps having expected to travel back and seize power had the insurrection succeeded. He has since issued a watered down statement against the insurrection committed on his behalf.
Democracies of the world must act fast to make clear there will be no support for right-wing insurrectionists storming the Brazilian Congress. These fascists modeling themselves after Trump’s Jan. 6 rioters must end up in the same place: prison.
