Sunday Reflection: Roe v. Wade

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, which established the Constitutional right to abortion. The Court based the decision on an implied right to privacy contained in the 9th and 14th Amendments, a decision that right-wing, forced birth evangelical and political activists have been fighting against ever since. The appointment of three far-right wing Supreme Court justices by the Malignant Loser during his shameful term gave the forced-birth proponents a victory when, on June 24, 2022, Roe v. Wade was struck down in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in an arrogant and nastily-worded decision delivered by the Court's master of bile Samuel Alito. Since Dobbs, fourteen Republican-controlled states have ceased nearly all abortion services. In the 2022 mid-term elections, women's reproductive rights and democracy itself were on the ballot, helping to defeat the projected Republican "red wave."  In a statement noting the anniversary, President Biden said:

"Today, instead of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, we are acknowledging that last year, the Supreme Court took away a Constitutional right from the American people.

"Since the Supreme Court decision, Americans, time and again, have made their voices heard: women should be able to make these deeply personal decisions free from political interference. Yet, Republicans in Congress and across the country continue to push for a national abortion ban, to criminalize doctors and nurses, and to make contraception harder to access. It's dangerous, extreme and out of touch.

I'll continue to fight to protect a woman's right to choose. Congress must restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law -- it's the only way we can fully secure a wonan's right to choose in every state."
