A man who will never be President, former Vice President and human coat rack Mike "Fly Guy" Pence announced on Fox that he would like to end Social Security and Medicare for younger Americans. Apparently unaware that he had just touched the fatal "third rail" of politics, Pence said that we have to stop "nibbling at the edges of the Federal budget" and that the popular entitlement programs should be replaced by private savings accounts for people who won't be retiring in the next 20 years. Yes, take a big bite out of the budget and out of the rear ends of people planning retirement at a decent age.
Pence may not understand that Social Security and Medicare depend on younger workers to support the systems with their contributions, just as they would depend on future generations to do the same for them. It's a system that relies on intergenerational financial ties to work, not that he cares about people falling into poverty once they're retired or unable to meet medical expenses in old age. Nonetheless, we encourage Pence to proclaim this politically fatal idea (which he's been pushing for years) until he runs out of invitations to speak, or subpoenas to fight.
BONUS: Last Wednesday, we pointed out the Republicans' long fight against Social Security and Medicare.
