It's never a good sign in politics if your major donors decide to shut off the money spigot, but that's apparently happening to Florida's fascistic Gov. Ron "Bootsie" DeSantis. His book banning and disastrous suicide mission on abortion are causing angst among his donors, among them billionaire Thomas Peterffy:
"Speaking on Saturday with the Financial Times, Peterffy, a Hungarian-born American billionaire, said, 'I have put myself on hold,' while discussing financing DeSantis' possible presidential bid. 'Because of his stance on abortion and book banning...myself, and a bunch of friends, are holding our powder dry."
Peterffy is the founder and chairman of Interactive Brokers, a digital trading platform. Last year, he donated more than 7 million dollars to Republican campaigns, according to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that tracks data on campaign finance and lobbying. [snip]
In January, Peterffy told the Financial Times that he was looking forward to backing DeSantis if he announced a 2024 presidential run. But now, he seems to be thinking twice.
'I am more reluctant to back him. We are waiting to see who among the primary candidates is most likely to be able to win the general, and then put all of our firepower behind them,' he told the newspaper on Saturday." (our emphasis)
We have news for Mr. Peterffy: Republican candidates will espouse positions that are losers in the general election, since the Republican / Forced Birth / Shooters party is on the wrong side of popular opinion, whether it's reproductive rights, gun safety, or the social safety net. But please throw your money away.
