Two out of three Democrats in the Tennessee State House of Representatives who protested the lack of action on gun violence following the massacre at the Covenant School in Nashville on March 27 were shamefully expelled by NRA coin- operated Republican fascists in the Tennessee House -- for breaking a decorum rule:
In an extraordinary act of political retaliation, Tennessee Republicans on Thursday expelled two Democratic lawmakers from the state Legislature for their role in a protest that called for more gun control in the aftermath of a deadly school shooting in Nashville.
The banishment of Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson was a move the chamber has used only a handful times since the Civil War. Most state legislatures possess the power to expel members, but it is generally reserved as a punishment for lawmakers accused of serious misconduct, not used as a weapon against political opponents.
The GOP supermajority in the House declined by a single vote to expel a third Democrat, Rep. Gloria Johnson.
The two Representatives expelled carried the additional burden, in the eyes of the thug Christofascist Republicans, of being young and ... Black.
Vindictive, autocratic bullies that they are, the gerrymandered Republican supermajority viewed a First Amendment act of conscience as worthy of punishment, rather than standing up against the gun lobby and gun humpers in passing legislation that could protect their constituents from gun violence. Of course, this is the same knuckle- dragging Christofascist caucus that passed extreme anti- abortion legislation following Dobbs. As Republicans in legislatures across the country and Congress attempt to force their vile, unpopular views on the majority of Americans (see Kansas, see Wisconsin, etc.), they will continue to pay an electoral price. We need to make that happen no matter where we live.
